Using the Additional Information Section

On the CommonApp there is the option below the writing prompt to give further information and I am using this space to elaborate on my extracurriculars and interests pertaining to creative writing. Is it ok if I write it in an 'essay narrative' in order to explain my introduction to the interest in writing, a competition, and how I have developed since? Or is it intended to be strictly factual?

I would make it short and concise and provide the addtl information. If you want to write the narrative and that development, I would make it an essay on its own.

The problem I had was that it could not really fit into the prompts provided on the app and this is the only other space that will go round to every college that I apply to. Are there any other opinions?

If the school allows, you could try to get a supplemental rec from a teacher who has worked with you on creative writing in the past.

Ad coms have thousands of applications to read. They really don’t want supplemental essays… use that section to bullet point achievements that you can’t fit into the app otherwise. Don’t add an essay. If that is an essay you really want to write, then use it for your common app essay. Don’t add to their reading burden, they really won’t thank you…

Ok, I have decided to focus more on the details with a little bit of narrative. It won’t be that long anyway and at most would take a couple of minutes to read.

Generally, the advice is to avoid adding to the adcom’s reading burden by not sending additional essays. But, when you are writing about your interest in and talent for writing, I think a bit of excellent writing in the Add’l Info section might not be a bad thing.

Like intparent has done, I caution you against writing another 650 word essay (even though the AI section would allow for that). But, using 350 words or so to further highlight your writing skill and present your information in essay form might be an effective way to use the space.

Thanks niceday, that is the length that I am currently around.
