Using the Common App to its capacity

If I wanted to make a point of my family's low income, where would the best place to do this be? Additional information? Writing an essay on it isn't something I could do. I find that whiny and trying to blame it for my problems.

When I say low income I mean really low.

Have you discussed your application with your high school’s college counselor yet? He or she should be able to say something about your family circumstances in the letter that will go out on your behalf. It’s the counselor’s job to provide the college with this kind of information, and any other distinguishing information about you as an applicant. If you haven’t scheduled an appointment with one yet, do it soon and make sure that they know your background.
If you have worked to help your family during the summers, this is something you can explain on your application, but unless the application asks you to talk about any hardships you have overcome, I’d let your letters of recommendation do the talking about your financial situation.
