Hey guys,

I got accepted to HAAS this year but due to various medical reasons I can't attend. I'll be applying to UCLA and CAL next year, would it be ok to use the same personal statement? Or should I pick a new topic completely? Thanks.

I’d say it’s a good idea to use the same statement as a foundation for a new and better statement. In this year, you can do a number of things to enhance your application.

Also, why don’t you contact admissions and ask about deferring your admission?

@Transfer2Best

xelink is right, Can’t you defer your admission?

transfers can’t defer.

I agree with those two.

@Stephen91: I was accepted to UCLA and had to defer for medical reasons last year. They granted my deferment right away, it was no more effort than an e-mail and a few calls. Maybe Cal is different, but ultimately everyone who works at the school is a person and you CAN get a lot of things done that they say you cant if you just ask.

Buuuuut I didn’t get my deferment approved until after November 30th, so I re-applied and used my same personal statements and got into Cal (which I got denied from last year) so I don’t think it’s a big deal. Honestly I don’t think the personal statement is of the utmost importance if you have good stats (which you obviously do if you got into Haas).

Thanks for all the responses guys. XE, the statement is almost perfect… I believe its the reason I got into HAAS which is why I want to keep it perfect… if I changed it a little bit of the wording around wont they just frown upon that rather than not change it at all? Will UCLA frown upon this since the personal statement is probably on turnitin.com (I didnt apply to UCLA this year, just CAL)… ughh so much confusion. So guys is this a “yes dont change it? or twist it a little bit? or just change it?” Unfortunately I cant defer due to the reason that I am ineligible because I could not complete my FL requirement (due to medical reasons I had to withdraw my classes this semester)

I did so with slight updates and was accepted both times. You should be fine.

thanks blahblah… what do you consider slight updates?

I used the same statement but I refurbished it to be tailored to my major Better and include anything that happened in the past year that would make my PS sound better.

It depends on the basis of your personal statement. I used the same one two years in a row but I altered it slightly because in this past year things have changed, but for the most part the essay was the same. For example, my biggest accomplishment was being a mother- and although it is still my biggest accomplishment, the kids are older and I am wiser and there fore I changed with the personal statement.
Just use your best judgement and be thoroughly honest, but remember, your story doesn’t change just because they have already read it, so I would never completely disregard a statement because it has already been submitted- it is still who you are.

I got accepted to Cal as a L&S major but have decided to reapply as a Haas major, I really liked one of my admission essays and I’m thinking about using that essay again, what are you guys’ thoughts on that? and does anyone know whether or not Haas majors are reviewed by a different committee of admission officers?
