Using the same topic for my personal essay and supplement

I have a really good topic that I used for my personal essay, the founding and owning of my own business, but would also like to write about it for my supplement:

"Discovery may be the truest form of learning. Notre Dame is a place where your academic passions will be engaged and encouraged through undergraduate research. Describe an academic project that you have already pursued in high school, and tell us how this project inspires you to engage in further discovery."

Do you think this would be a problem? My only concern is that it will look like I am too focused on my business and not on other parts of life.

The application is the only way the admission counselors have of getting to know you, and the better they know you, the more likely they are to consider you for admission. Because of that, I would advise against using the same topic for both. You want to show diversity of interest, ability, and involvement.

Agree with kevdude. Don’t limit your profile revelations to one narrow area. You get one shot at convincing the adcoms that you are worthy. Don’t overemphasize just one aspect about yourself.

I concur.

what kind of business did you start? I only ask because I too started a business, a web design firm. It’s not just for fun either. We actually have clients and are making money.

Bad idea. Notre Dame admissions counselor told me at an info session to make them different so that they can learn more about you. Don’t do it!

Ok, thanks guys. I took your advice and writing a new essay for the Common App prompt. I am just concerned about length. Do you think 3 pages double-spaced would be too long for this essay?

Yes. It should be roughly 500 words, which works out to about 2 pages double spaced. 3 pages is too much.
