Using "we" or "us"?

Hello!

I am currently stuck on the use of “we” or “us” in a sentence.

Could someone please explain it to me … in a dumbed-down version?

For example, in “For we students, concern about impending tuition hikes …”

It would be “For US students, concern about …”

I would just like someone to elaborate on the topic - thanks!

Use “us” - object of preposition - eliminate the word students and you will see us works better.

‘Us students’ - being affected by the tuition hikes. Preposition object.
Unless it’s a direct object i.e. ‘WE students’ are doing something, then use ‘Us’.

e.g. The teachers will soon be tired of us children.

or,

We babysitters want to know when parents will start respecting us. vs.
When will parents start respecting us babysitters?

I am still having a difficult time understanding it …

Like nerdyparent stated, is there some kind of TEST I can do to figure out when to use “us” or “we”?

Kind of like with “me” and "I’ … if you remove the subject you can tell which one to use …

Thanks.

When to Use We or Us

It can be tricky but there is an easy way to decide whether to use we or us in sentences that contain statements such as “we bloggers” or “us girls.”

Simply remove the noun from the sentence and decide which pronoun would be used on its own.
Examples:
We bloggers were introduced first at the conference.
(“We were introduced first at the conference” is correct whereas “Us were introduced at the conference” is incorrect.)
That movie didn’t frighten us girls at all.
(“That movie didn’t frighten us at all” is correct whereas “That movie didn’t frighten we at all.”)

Thank you so much. I think that helped a bunch. :]

(and for future reference, the concept you’re struggling with is “pronoun case”)
