Our New Cadet made a very hard decision and elected to leave WP. He still wants to serve as a career officer and I respect that. His desire is to attend a local major university and go through a NROTC program. Is that possible after leaving WP?

rasdad,
Tough decisions for such young people.
I know you can join army ROTC once on campus, without scholarship at first. I am not sure about NROTC. I know they choose where you go for scholarships, for instance my son's NROTC scholarship did not come through for his top two schools of choice.
He is at West Point now as a New Cadet too.
I wish your son well and I hope he finds peace with his decisions.

rasdad: I hate to see someone make a life changing decision during a time of such stress. Hopefully he has been given all of the counselling he needs. I wish your son everything of the best for his future.

rasdad: best of luck to your son-

rasdad, I'm pretty sure he can go into NROTC through the College Program (non-scholarship). Since he got into to WP, he more than likely would qualify for a scholarshp after the first year. My S is in NROTC at our big state u. I know there are several doing the college program in his battalion. One boy transferred in spring semester.
Kids change their minds all the time. S's freshman NROTC class had 27 at the beginning of the year and finished the year with about 15. Contact the battlion at your local university that he wishes to attend and ask if it's too late to get in the college program for the Fall. Let them know that he has just come to this decision and is really serious about it. You don't necessarily have to tell them he withdrew from WP (don't want to bring up any question marks about commitment!). It might not have any bearing on their decision but you never know.
You need to act quickly though. Last summer we had a mountain of paperwork to get in and stuff to buy for indoc week which took place the week before classes started.

rasdad,

I wish all the best for your son and you, as well. It's an extremely difficult decision and it appears he was very thoughtful about how he made it. I commend him for his commitment to serve as an officer in the U.S. military. Best of luck!

I know somebody who went to USAFA, left during the first summer, went to UTEP and joined afrotc, and then got a 3-year scholarship (i think) for soph-senior year, and just recently recieved a pilot slot through afrotc.

Rasdad, good luck to him from me as well. Ya know, most of these kids are like cats & they land back on their feet so don't stress too much over his decision. He'll do well in NROTC. I'd bet money on it.

rasdad, Spoke to my NROTC Son about your question. He feels sure it will be no problem. There is a kid in his battalion who applied to USNA as a Senior in h.s., got rejected so went to State U and did ROTC for Freshman yr. and reapplied to the Academy. He got accepted and went to USNA for Soph. year but was very unhappy there. So he came back to State U NROTC for his Jr. year and will be graduating in '07.
Like I said, kids change their mind all the time. My S has always wanted to be an officer and seriously entertained the idea of trying to go to a Service Academy (I think he would have had a good shot) until the spring of his jr. year in h.s. when he told us he had decided on NROTC instead. He has never regretted his decision. Good luck to your son.

Thanks for all the information and support for my son. I let you know what happens.
