I got a nomination to USMMA, but not USNA. I am most likely going to decline it. After putting it down as a second choice to USNA I made a decision on USNA only and no other. I feel pretty bummed because that only leaves one other Nom. App. unanswered and I feel my chances have slimmed greatly.

What is your goal? To attend the USNA or become a Naval Officer?

If you feel you must attend the USNA, you can always enroll in a civilian college and re-apply next year if you don't make it this year.

Or you can explore another route to becoming an officer in the USN.

One way is attending and graduating from the USMMA.

Search these threads, there are quite a few lively discussions about your "dilemma."

Isn't that Sonny and Cher singing 'I've Got You, Babe" in the background.?

zrmvrhs,

Take a moment to step back and try to consider your decision in the context of a career and your long term goals. It's tough task for someone at your age, especially when things don't work out as you hoped or planned and you may feel as though you have limited choices or feel as though you have to resolve this decision and settle on a path immediately.

I don't know anything about your backup plans, but if becoming a Naval Officer through attendance at the USNA is your goal, then don’t loose sight of that goal or let it go until you are satisfied with your efforts. As has been suggested you can reapply next year. There are also many paths available to anyone interested in becoming a Naval Officer, some may be more appealing or appropriate depending on you choice of major then others.

Talk to as many people as you can about their experiences and the path they took. Keep an open mind and understand that such a decision invokes a great deal of passion on the part of many who have gone down each of the paths before you.

Compromise will be an inevitable part of your life experiences; we don’t always get what we want. So long as you feel good about the effort you put into pursuing your goals, regardless of the outcome, then you’ll still be the person you started out to become.

Good luck in whatever path you choose.

I am going to wait to hear from my other MOC. Then from there I will decide.

One of my backup plans is to go to a civilian college and take classes similar to those of a normal plebe would take.

Another thing that I might hope for is NAPS or an offer to the Foundation Program. But you can't count on something like that. Though I would take it in a heartbeat.

I read up on USMMA and have decided it really isn't for me. I am pretty set in stone about USNA. So there is always reapplying next year like rjzoom and luigi said.

Just a blow to the ego kind of thing, you know? :(

Have you heard from your other nominating sources? Don't give up hope!

I have heard from 2 out of 3.... 1 Senator and my areas MOC. Waiting to hear from one more Senator. Cross your fingers!

Don't give up hope yet, but your plan sounds like a good one if you want Annapolis over all others. You can keep applying until you're 23 years old.

You may also want to chat with someone from admissions or a BGO and ask what else you can do to strengthen your application during the year of waiting.

Don't forget about the National Pool for noms, either. If you're a strong candidate who got edged out in your state or district by kids who were just a little more competitive, you still can be considered for a nom from the pool. That's what happens for a lot of kids from competitive areas.

It's way too early to be "sticking a fork" in your candidacy, so keep your chin up and keep the faith. The "building of the class of 2012" is just getting underway now, and the vast majority of the class hasn't been appointed yet. Don't be discouraged by all the posting from folks who have already received LOA's and/or appointments because they are in the minority of applicants.

USNA loves reapplicants, too. That's a direct quote from our Regional Director for Admissions from last year. So, if you are unsuccessful this year, go to a school and take the equivalent of the Plebe curriculum and kick butt. Your SAT/ACT scores will be far less important than your college grades.

This might sound crazy, but you could always go to USMMA for a year, and reapply to USNA. Two Plebe years (I think they call them Swabs at USMMA) might be a little tough to handle, but I know more than a few guys who did a year at West Point or USAFA and then did Plebe Year at USNA.

i would do whatever it takes to get in. I am a junior in high school now and scared of being in the same dilemna. Do you mind telling your stats so i know what got you a nom for USMMA and not USNA?

Let's see... some of my stats
GPA- 4.2 (weighted) 3.4 (unweighted)
SAT- 620 Math 600 Critical Reading
NHS
Varsity Tennis since Freshmen Year
Select Club Soccer outside of School
Started an Awareness Club For the War in Uganda
Many AP Classes (i.e. AP Biology, AP English III, AP Economics, AP World History, etc.)
College Credit in English Comp I & II, US Govt, and US History
Health Occupations Students of America Officer
State Competitor for Latin Club
Varsity Mixed and Show Choir
All-District and All-Region Recognition for Choir

I think thats it. I also wouldn't look at it as I wasn't good enough to get USNA nom so they gave me USMMA instead. I just don't have an interest in attending USMMA.

Some great advice for succeeding at ANY of the service academies (and you've heard it before), is to become very comfortable with Calculus, Physics, and Chemistry. It's not really enough to simply do it "OK" in a perfect environment.

I overheard one Plebe telling his Dad "You were exactly right. It's not just doing the Calculus, it's being able to do it when you are bone weary and have a ton of stuff to do in each class, and someone is yelling at you to do other activities as well".

I didn't notice Physics or Calculus/Chemistry in your list. And you definitely want to be familiar with them before you walk through the doors of ANY academy.

Congrats on you desire to serve -- you will find a way!

I have taken both Physics and Chemistry Labs, just didn't have enough room in the schedule for AP classes. Calculus on the other hand I also didn't have room for. Although I have taken Pre-Calculus and College level Algebra.

would hold off declining anything until all parties have been heard from!

Best of luck! Hang in!

Just noted in our local paper blurb about a grad of USMMA that is now a USN Lt. Helo Pilot that is now going back for his FOURTH tour.

Also know a Direct to USNA, transferred out after Plebe year, went NROTC at local University, now USMC Pilot.

There is ALWAYS a way if you keep pushing against the wall.
