Can you attend USMMA for a year and then apply to USNA?

yes, had a kid in my class who got accepted to USNA in the spring of our plebe year and still completed his plebe year at USMMA before reporting to USNA. Just beware that you will still have to do the full four years at USNA and repeat your plebe year. Not sure why anyone would want to do that, but I know of at least one who did.

Thanks for the info.
What kind of grades did he have and activities did he do? Are the USMMA guys a little ****ed when they have a guy applying to another academy?

why would you want to do that? there are people here that actually want to come here, and then we have people like you that only want to come here becuase they didn't get into navy or they are planning to apply next year. don't bother wasting your time coming here if you plan on going to navy becuase there are kids that legimately want to come here, and peopl like you just take their spots

I'd go have fun for a year at a regular school, trust me do that.

"I'd go have fun for a year at a regular school, trust me do that."

A much better option if it is truly USNA you want and you wouldn't be happy any other way

Or you could always join the Navy and apply as an enlisted sailor - many go to USNA and USMMA that way. I know there are a handfull at USMMA and hearsay is 20 percent or so at USNA.

Both of these Academies are very competitive. The USMMA turns away an large number of fully qualified students who truely want to be Merchant Mariners. The admissions people have to make agonizing decisions between candidates based on minute details, and often, a deciding factor is the candidates' demonstrated "want-to". Sometimes it seems that they have to flip a coin. Either way, someone's hopes are crushed. To be successfull at the USMMA, you have to genuinely WANT to go there and be committed to succeed there. Otherwise you risk becoming a "statistic".

This is also true at USNA.
My son chose USMMA while his best friend chose USNA, the same year. They stay in touch and both are very happy with their decisions.

Bottom line... I second the reccommendations above. Go to a regular college and play for a year, then apply to the academy of your choice. You will be happier.

Agreeing with above. While it technically may be possible to reapply and go to USNA from USMMA, it is not a good action plan.
1) you may not get in.
2) you have deprived someone of a slot at USMMA.
3) you have to do 4 years at USNA anyway.
4) You have wasted federal taxpayer money to the tune of about $75,000 for the year at USMMA.
5) Your reapplication for USNA can be accomplished perhaps more easily from a regular college or even as an enlisted serviceman.

However, if your ultimate objective is to serve your country as a naval officer (or other service) you can get there via USMMA or ROTC at college.
Service academies are tough (USMMA and USCG have highest failure/dropout rates-significanly higher than USNA) and should not be viewed as only the end objective but the means to the rest of your life as a leader in our society.
