I am a Junior at a small town high school. I have a 3.75 and rising weighted g.p.a, I am in an Army JROTC program, in the program I am on the raider team, color guard, and rifle team. I am on JROTC staff and im currently a 2LT. I am a captain of our winning raider and rifle teams. I am the color guard commander in which I do over 30 a year. I get top marksman on my rifle team at our competitions. I have a rigourous aademic schedual with all college, honors, or AP classes. I have lettered in cross country, raiders, rifle team, MACC, and forensics for 2 years now. I switched schools back in 8th grade to pursue a military career. I want to be a Marine Officer not because i want to kill a bunch of people but because i have a strong since of duty to serve our great nation. Back in 6th grade my teacher asked me what I wanted to be and when I told her she laughed and told me to pick a more realistic dream. Ever since then I have been driven and have a burning desire of acheiving it.I am currently the secretary of student council and i am confident i will be the Battalion Commander of my JROTC unit and the President of student council by my senior year. I have about 200 hours of community service, I am in great physical shape, i run a 6 20 mile, 80 pushups, 80 curlups, in the standard Army P.T. tests. I can do 15 pullups, bench 230, run a 21 min 5k, ect. So with all that in mind and many other acheivements and leadership seminars i was selected to go in, plus working a job during the summer if im not at a summer camp, do you think my odds of getting into the naval academy? (I have yet to take the SAT but Its on my agenda.)

Impressive stuff, cadet. Hooah! (couldn’t resist, former AFJROTC myself)

Unfortunately, without your SAT score it’s hard to make a good guess right now. The academies only take the best of the best as I’m sure you know (like, people who get Type 1’s good), but you’re about as close as they come.

All you can do now is rock your SAT’s, keep doing what you’re doing, and STAY ON TOP OF YOUR DEADLINES!! You should also consider the SMC’s as a fallback.

What is the SMC’s? Im from Virginia so im leaning towards VMI

VMI is one of them, yeah. The others are Norwich, Texas A&M, U of North Georgia, the Citadel, and Virginia Tech. I know 3 guys at the Citadel right now who are Marine-option NROTC. Virginia Tech isn’t too shabby either since you’re in-state.

I just feel like I dont have a chance in hell of getting in. I dont have a 4.2 gpa or a 1400 2 part SAT score but you can do anything with a good work ethic. I dont try and kill my teachers if they dont give me an A. I work hard and have a rigorous everyday schedual. This is life to me though and i cna take whatever the Academy wants to throw at me.

You sure do, man. They’ll see that when you apply. Plus, you have a lot of experience in JROTC which will be extremely helpful at the academies/ROTC-level. But you can’t get worked up over your SAT score if you haven’t taken it yet. Just take a deep breath, do the practice tests, and do well when it’s time to take the test.

It’s really impossible to predict chances. I know people who had a 4.0, tons of leadership, 2300 SAT, and all that jazz, and didn’t get in. I know people with a lower GPA and not as high of a SAT score that did go in. It’s really hard to say who the admissions board will pick, it depends on a LOT of things (aside from the more obvious ones [academics, leadership, sports, ECs], geography, essay responses, and letters of rec).

Just try the best you can on the SAT. Take the ACT too. Aim for very strong math scores especially.

What’s your class rank? That’s taken into consideration way more than GPA.

And if you don’t get in, you can always reapply. Have a Plan B ready, or more like a second Plan A, like NROTC.
