I'm starting to feel really torn between Notre Dame (NROTC 4yr scholarship) and USNA as my full appointment came in the mail last week.
I got into ND EA.
I understand the decision is ultimately my own, but I was wondering if any of you had any advice or perspectives from which I could benefit.

Won't you have a military commitment upon graduation from USNA? How many years will that be? If you graduate from ND, you will be free to work wherever you choose. Both are fine institutions offering superb educations--I guess it just depends on the commitment to the service that might cause you to think about the choice.

In my humble opinion, you should take the NROTC scholarship and go to ND. From a military family with people graduating from ND, USAFA and USNA, the academy life is stressful and military 24/7. Some people like it, some people hate it. There is rarely a gray area. After 4 years, the end result is the same: a commission. The question you have to answer is: do you want the academy environment or a "normal" college experience at a great university? I don't think you can go wrong, but keep in mind that ND NROTC is one of, if not the best NROTC units in the country.

Notre dame AL: the NROTC scholarship stipulates a minimum 4 year active commitment as well

ND would be a great fit if by chance you wanted to switch into Marine option. If you switch to Marine option, you are guaranteed to go USMC provided you complete OCS, while at the Academy, people that apply for USMC aren't always accepted.

They have some similarities: great boxing programs, alums who have f-ed up foreign policy (Carter, Rice), Navy and Gold colors, girls (you can think what you want about this).

If you ever want to sleep in, then ND is the way to go.

Not true. I haven't slept in a day all year.

Then you haven't learned to game the system: 2:30 average start time and no class on Friday. Rack it.

Not if you are an engineering major!

Or in Marine Corps ROTC.

hahahahahaha

danbrenn, are you a Marine Option student at ND?

Hope I have this problem. My top two dream schools are ND and USNA. If I get accepted to both and get a good enough scholarship, ROTC or not from ND. If I'm lucky enough to have this choice, I'll probably go with ND.

mmartins... In my personal opinion, I would go with Notre Dame hands-down. But that's me- I have a long history with the school, and I also have the 4-yr Navy Option NROTC scholarship to ND... just waiting for the acceptance letter (hopefully). Now, unlike most of my friends who also got the scholarship, I did not apply to USNA. The reason for this was that I want to experience the real college life. I have a friend at USNA who was a plebe this year and I can tell you, it changed him a lot. You have to be able to withstand a lot of degrading treatment for your first year if you want to make it through. But if you want to go career Navy, USNA will give you a little advantage down the road when it comes to promotions and such... not a big one, but a bit. Notre Dame NROTC is the best in the country and you won't regret going with them... well, us. I'm accepted at Saint Mary's, so I'm going to be in the unit no matter what my letter from ND says. But, like you said, the decision is ultimately up to you. Hope this helps.

*I posted this on your repeat thread... but no one seems to be looking at that one.
