USNCO 2011 Discussion!

Does anyone know how the free response section of the national exam is scored? Do significant figures matter?

Adding on to what sunshine asked, how lenient are they with grading the free response section? Do they give out partial credit if you were close but not exactly right?

There is partial credit, but I dont know how sig figs work for the FR

I hope sig figs do not matter. They are my enemies.

ahhh I remember the USNCO. It’s too bad they didn’t choose me for the camp in 2008, I’m a better chemist than half the US team.

I believe that the testing window is now closed, since today is April 3rd. What did you guys think about the local test? Feel free to discuss any questions.

I’ve been taking some practice tests. What will these scores rank me ~approximately?

51/60 MC; 80% free response; below average + average on labs

I’ll try finding the info on the previous years threads, but roughly in terms of percent correct, what score is needed to advance to finalist? For example, I think with the USABO, about a 70% is the cutoff… what is it for the USNCO?

–51/60 MC; 80% free response; below average + average on labs

first time to do the test? Never did before?

big, you’ve already taken the national test? i didn’t think the testing period was until next weekend

No, national is next Friday. I am asking VictorWang for his post.

National test here is Monday April 18.

i think it is supposed to be april 14-17, but maybe there is some flexibility on dates.

It’s April 14-18.

^ i can’t go to the website at home as it bombs my computer (on dialup)

thanks for the info though.

Does anybody know if usnco gives points for parts of an frq even though you used a wrong answer from a previous part?

Woo! Made it to the nationals, taking it on the 16th. Is the first part of the exam similar in difficulty to the local exam? Are the labs hard? Do they rank you even if you don’t make it into the top 20?

:D

So mad I didn’t get to take the local exam…

My school says “Senior year” for everything.

To graceee: The first part of the national exam (the multiple choice) is much harder than the local exam. I got a 56ish on the local and my practice exams are 45-50 for the MC for the national exam. You get listed as part of high honors (top 50) and honors (top 150) but do not get ranked; just listed alphabetically in either of these categories or if you’re a top 20 finalist.

Does anyone know how many people qualify for the USNCO national exam each year? I know the USAMO is only about 400. How about USABO and USNCO in comparison?
