usabo semi finals is top 500
i think usnco “semi-finals” (national exam) is about 1000, but could be wrong.

in order to get into camp, you need to:

get 50-55 on the MC - 40% of your score
90%+ on the FR - 40% of your score
average on the labs…better if you fall below the previous two sections - 20% of your score

So clearly the labs aren’t trivial, but focusing on the MC and FR is more important. In 2007 a returning camper (from 2006) got a 48 on the MC, but the test was harder that year.

Make sure you answer the FR questions thoroughly since the answer key generally varies (which is part of the reason why the test isn’t really much about thinking but fact re-call/formula memorization)

And you can be a IChO medalist and still fail to get an A in college organic chemistry…don’t be that guy lol

Also know that if you don’t fall within the top 150 for the MC, they won’t bother grading your FRQ and labs.

wait is the top 150 just determined by only MC?

Still haven’t gotten my local exam score and tests begin distribution tomorrow, apparently?

What.

^contact whoever at school is organizing the exams. Scores have been available since 4/4, at least.

how they pick top 4 people in the CAMP to international level? What kinds of test?

Hey big, sorry for the late reply…

Yes, I took an old national exam and had difficulty figuring out one of the labs.

first time, that is not bad

Once you get to the study camp level of the 20 National Finalists, then they undergo about 2 weeks of learning a lot of chemistry and then at the end of that the finalists all test. The top 4 finalists are selected, along with 2 alternates, to attend the International competition that year.

For the actual test, I’m unsure of what is on it, but my former finalist friend told me that it was like the national exam in structure, harder, and more specific towards certain topics that would be covered on the International exam.

Big:

Not bad as in… top 150?

Does the test grade on sig figs? Because the practice test answers show incorrect sig figs.

This is only my first year so I can’t say anything for sure, but from what the posts I’ve read in the past threads and years, I think that you should be in the top 150 if you do just as well as you have been.

Wow that was hard…

What did you guys get for the lab practical (the one with delta H)?

also, what was the answer to question about vitamins?

Please do not discuss questions GreedIsGood. Some sections have not administered the exam, and you are giving students an unfair advantage.

@utsamagoots3 - how certain are you of the 150 cut off for grading? That doesn’t seem appropriate as a person may be stronger in one category over another. See Hovito’s breakdown - there is still another 60% (more or less) that is relevant to the overall score beyond just the MC.

I think we’re supposed to get our scores in a week or so, so I suppose we’ll see then if the entire exam is graded or not :).

my director said that they do not grade your free response or lab if you do not fall within the top 150 of the multiple choice

not exactly the answer i wanted to hear, but ok, thanks.

ok, so what percent correct (of MC) is going to be in the top 150? (roughly)
