I’m taking the test tommorow. Good LUCK EVERYONE!!!
just kidding, in two days
When you qualify for Nationals yet there’s a band festival on the same day so you can’t attend ;-;-;-;-;-;-;.
I wouldn’t have done well anyway, but I wish I got to experience it. Oh whale. At least I get to say that I qualified for Nats.
I thought the exam was pretty brutal at least for part 1. pm if you want to discuss (with proof of course)
@sattake and to anyone else who has taken the exam:
DO NOT DISCUSS THE EXAM WITH ANYONE UNTIL MAY. REMEMBER THAT THIS IS A COMPETITION.
General comments, however, are fine.
how long does it take for them to grade the test and release the results?
Ahhh I’m taking it tomorrow and I’m honestly so nervous… probably going to get wrecked, but I just really want to at least get somewhat above average (though the chances of making Top 150 are very slim at best)
@Cornbread1999 If you make the study camp, you will get a phone call by the first week in May. Otherwise, the list of Honors and High Honors will be released in mid-May.
im taking it right now (on lunch break between part 2 and 3) and it says the last day to take it is 4/25 so it should be fine to talk about it after that
@essyr2017 Yes, you’re right.
I just took it. My experience was something like this:
MC: I hate chemistry.
FRQ: I think I know how to do this… wait, no, I don’t.
Lab: Hey, I actually know what to do for once.
@1golfer1 Yeah… The MC was so random. the questions didnt mirror the last years like they normally do. FRQ was also needlessly complex. Overrall was very hard and crushed my hopes at honors lol. What do you think the honors cuttoff will be?
@sattake Last year I got honors with 48. This year, the honors cutoff will be low 40s. The scores are going to be terrible.
FRQ is hit-or-miss depending on the person. Question 6 as a whole was extremely random and practically impossible if you weren’t familiar with the concept. USNCO hasn’t asked anything similar to this in years (or ever). The “explain why…” problems in Question 7 were borderline ridiculous. I found the electrochemistry problem to be the most challenging – Never seen something like that anywhere. The rate law problem was also exremely weird. Everyone I talked with had serious issues on these ones, and no one was really sure of his or her answers (if able to attempt the problem…). Somewhere around ~75 / 100 is really good here.
However, everyone knew how to do both lab practicals.
Could you please not discuss the exam until after 4/25. Otherwise, it will be reported to the ACS.
@ChemistOne I’m pretty sure that saying that there were challenging electrochemistry and kinetics problems isn’t going to help anyone… It’ll probably make them panic and score worse (from personal experience, unfortunately).
@1golfer1 Just make sure you don’t violate the rule. I would remove the post just in case.
Yeah. I’ll be happy with a 40 on this.
My S also thought Part 1 was hard. He said FRQ and Lab were OK. He took it yesterday in CA.
Would a 45/60 on MC get top 150?
@ParadoxChem126 It probably will.
We are good to discuss stuff now.
aight. pm if you want to discuss. or we could just do it on the thread
