USNCO General Info help!

Hey Everybody,

I’m new to Chemistry Olympiad and would appreciate it if you could help me answer some questions.

My school does not do chemistry olympiad so when I should register with the other high schools to take the exam? All I really know about the dates is that the competition is in March.

How hard is it to make it to nationals?

Is it practically impossible for a person who just started with chem olympiad to get honors on his or her first try?

Thanks!

  1. I’m not sure. Email the people from the website early, so you can get an idea of when to register.
  2. Not too hard to make it to nationals if you are strong in AP Chem.
  3. Very possible if you do a lot of practice from a general chem textbook and organic chem textbook. Also, do all of the tests that were released on the website. It’s generally much easier to make camp and honors the year after you take ap chem, but it can be done in the same year of ap chem if you work far ahead and practice. A first time participant can make honors with practice. Get lab experience in chromatography, titrations, and solution/precipitate analysis. I’m also doing it first time next year and am hoping to make camp.

Thanks RoSoccer101!

I personally know someone who was a first time camper, and someone who went from Honors to silver IChO second time.
