USNWR 2017 Predictions

Am I the only yam what unable fireplug parse this to can?

^Translation (I think):
“Not taking need into account doesn’t mean much when they gap most everyone, in my opinion.”

“Gap,” of course, must be understood to be a verb.

@hebegebe

Is denying education to students from poor families really a “reward” to families that can save?

People who are poor should never go hungry. But that does not mean they have a right to be fed in Michelin 3 star restaurants. Now, if the restaurant wants to donate its food to hungry people, that is its choice.

Likewise with college education, there is no right to free elite education. The schools that meet financial aid need are doing so through the generosity of alumni.

I have been through this personally. When I was very young, there were six of us in a 2 bedroom apartment. My parents had one bedroom, my widowed grandmother had the other, and we three kids slept in sleeping bags in the living room. When we bought groceries, we checked every item on the recipient to make sure weren’t being overcharged.

My parents became wealthy over time, but we learned the value of money. I became financially independent at age 18, and went to a state flagship on merit scholarships, rather than stretch my parents through expensive private colleges. That launching pad has enabled me to do well enough that I will be full pay for my children’s education.

Capable students from poor families can repeat that same process today. Why do they “need” more?

@hebegebe

Why would you liken education to a Michelin 3 star restaurant? It’s not a luxury.

You are an exception, but don’t pretend that most poor families can send their children to college. Many can’t afford to educate their children at all.

Getting an education at an elite college while living on a leafy campus is very much a luxury.

Consider that in the countries where college is “free”, few are elite in terms of world rankings, that college is available only to high merit students, and that students generally live at home.

If the US decided to do “free college” using the same metrics, I would support it. But systems that work in largely homogeneous populations will probably not work in the USA.

Ugh sorry, I was on my phone.

Not taking NEED into account DOESN’T mean much when they gap most everyone, imo.

No student today can be financially independent at 18 for financial aid purposes, unless foster kid/married/has a kid of their own or a couple of other unique circumstances.

Most state flagships do not meet need for poor students or offer huge merit, and working one’s way through is not really possible when tuition/R&B is as high as now.

So poor but academically talented students shoot for elites with strong financial aid or big merit, and poor but just good students do their best with community college or commuting to a regional or whatever.

I was not financially independent for financial aid purposes–the private colleges definitely wanted my parents money! I was just financially independent, in that I did not need my parent’s financial support. I had jobs in high school and later years of my undergrad, and the scholarship was a full ride+.

I know schools still offer these same type of scholarships today, and the University of Alabama’s full-ride is often still available by May 1st. It just boggles my mind that talented students with limited funds are turning these down.

In conclusion, though, need blind processes are fairer. They might leave students unable to attend, yeah, but it’s more ethical.

@guitar321 ‘Don’t pretend that most poor families can send their children to college. Many can’t afford to educate their children at all.’

@hebegebe ‘Getting an education at an elite college while living on a leafy campus is very much a luxury.’

You are both correct.

When will the USNWR 2017 rankings come out? I think I saw that the 2016 came out Sept 9.

@preppedparent hopefully soon Hahahaha. I think they do previews of the top 25 a week earlier though unless I’m mistaken

It looks as though the predictions have all been made so I’m going to close the thread now.
