Reading all of the posts speculating about this year's USNWR rankings, I thought that it would be more interesting to speculate about the rankings in 40 years from now, assuming that they're still around then.

*What will the rankings be? (liberal arts and national universities)
*How will the metrics change?
*What will the rankings for best education be?

Also, with more students choosing to go abroad to college, will other international rankings gain more significance compared to USNWR?

Oh, and anyone wondering why this is my first post--I used to have an account, but I changed the entry data so I couldn't get on it anymore. I was hoping to beat the addiction. Failed.

I may add a list later, I'm curious what other people think though.

Ehh. I don’t think they’ll be much different. USNews rankings are a self-fulfilling prophecy: selective schools are highly ranked, students want to go to highly ranked schools, the same schools become even more selective and therefore remain on top.

On the other hand, who knows if students will even want to go to all of those poor, dismentaled colleges now that they’ve lost their minds…

Because of the global warming and the rising sea level, all the elite East Coast and West Coast schools, including Ivies, Stanford, MIT, will be submerged underwater. Northwestern, U. Chicago, U. Michigan will reign supreme, except that they are now called Google University campus #1, #2 and #3. (Also, Kansas declares independence and what’s left of California joins Mexico. Potatoes become the de facto currency.)

^^ You guys all misunderstood me when I said " Vertual Professor" and Mars.

My predictions are:
Dooms day will come as prophecy in 2012
Human race will severly be elimated by the flood, quake and other desasters. A small group of survivors will be emerging in Boulder Co. UOCB will be the leading U on this desolated earth.
Earth will no longer be a viable planet to live, advanced transportation vehicle will be developed in UOCB. to transpoft humans to Mars as refuge.
1 TB (as oppose to GB) internet will be the defacto standard.
Virtual Image of Professors like the princess Leia in the Star Wars will appear in the homes on Mars to lecture college level courses and beyond.

Also, a mysterious virus wipes out 99.9% of the male population on the planet, making all universities more or less all women’s schools by that point.

UCSB, UCI, and UCD will all surpass UCLA and UC Berkley. lol

With their current trend they may be the best universities in the galaxy.
2011 - UCSB: 39, UC Davis: 39, UC Irvine: 41
2010 - UCSB: 42, UC Davis: 42, UC Irvine: 46
2009 - UCSB: 44, UC Davis: 44, UC Irvine: 44
