USRowing Junior Weight Change--Affecting College?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but starting September 1st, 2013, the junior rowing male lightweight weight is moving down to 150 lbs. How will this affect colleges? Especially for those who will no longer be able to maintain lightweight but will still be able to row lightweight in college? Will erg standards change? I'm a sophomore, but I don't know how this weight change will affect my chances once I start talking to colleges in the fall (if they'll ignore me because I wont actually be rowing lightweight anymore).

EDIT: For example I am 155 pounds with a 6:42 2k. Junior year (next year), I will have a lot of competition and won’t be rowing in any lightweight boats because cutting the wait that I will most likely gain in muscle by then won’t be smart for my health or wellbeing. Will coaches see me differently as rowing lightweight in college but being in heavy boats? My goal is 6:39- by the end of spring and low 6:30’s by the end of next summer with intense steady state training, but again, not as a lightweight.

The vast majority of recruited LWs don’t row LW in high school. In fact, the top recruits are the top boat movers, even in a HW boat. However, they will obviously consider your weight, both when looking at your erg time and also to figure out whether you can maintain the weight in college.

Requesting for this thread to be deleted. Thanks.

Go to the USRowing wbesite to check out the info re the rule changes.

You may find information regarding the thinking behind the weight changes and how it affects Jrs so that truly natural lightweights compete in the jr level and have room for collegiate lights weight gain/development.

BTW Beenthere…your comment about LW rowers as Jr vs collegiate isn’t correct IMHO

a top lw collegiate program wants a true lw jr because developmentally they expect growth…according to at least one TOP lw coach they expect 10 lbs…

That makes sense. One of my son’s peers was 170 as a HS senior junior rower, but was recruited LWT to HYP. He is finishing his freshman year and unsure about next year as he is constantly dieting, struggling with his weight, which is naturally increasing.
He is an accomplished rower. In a case like this would the HWT team take him, or are they completely separate? I suppose if he is good enough…
