UT and SAT Subjects

I've been tempted to call Texas Admissions re: this question, but I'm trying very hard to stay out of my son's application process. So I'll ask here.....Does UT look at SAT Subject scores?

My son sent his scores to UT Admissions, and I think they are important to his application....but I'm not sure if they will be considered. He did pretty well on his regular SATs, but the Math section was his lowest score (750CR, 750W, 710M). I don't really know what happened, other than he was extremely busy, had just scored a 36 on the ACT M and was really focused on what he perceived to be his weak SAT areas of CR and W. I think he just kinda relaxed on the Math section and ran out of time. To make up for it, he pushed hard and made an 800 on the Math Level 2 Subject test (and I believe 750 on Biology-M).

He's in AP-Calc BC...making low As/high Bs with little to no effort (definitely has senioritis) as well as four other AP classes. Making all As in his other classes. Rank is okay...top 5%. Rank is weird in our district. AP coursework receives same grade points as all other 'above level' courses. So we have the strange phenomenon of a B in AP Calc BC receiving less grade points than an A in Non-AP French III. He's in Band/Drumline and that is not weighted, so he loses ranking there as well. But his coursework is strong and his grades are good. Ironically, I worry more about the effect of rank on his Texas application than his Stanford/Duke applications. His extracurriculars are fairly strong...very focused/not scattered with awards/achievements.

Given all of the above, I'd like to hear that Texas will consider his SAT Subject scores, but I just don't know if that is SOP.

btw...first choice is Cockrell ChemE, second...CNS Biochem

Since your location says Texas, if you are indeed in Texas, then I am guessing since your son is an auto admit, your main concern is acceptance into major?? I think when you are looking at engineering, and the student is outside of the engineering auto admit range of 2-3%, then applications are viewed holistically, and therefore, they would consider the subject tests.

Just a side note…calling admissions at this point is really fruitless. At this point your son’s application is more than likely residing with either engineering or CNS. Calling to bring attention to a SAT subject test would probalby just rub them a little wrong. (The implication that they have to be “reminded” that your son has a golden SAT 2 score, they know how to read a file) ** The score is in his file.** Whether they consider it or not, is really their choice.

collegeshopping - He took the subject tests in December but submitted his application in November…so we don’t really know that “the score is in his file”. He tells me there is no acknowledgement of the subject scores when he logs into his status check page. I realize that if the score has been added to his file, it will be seen. But if SAT subjects are not considered, would they bother to add them to his file?

I never even considered that inquiring about the scores would ‘rub them wrong’. When I worked in college admissions, such an inquiry is not something that we would have found irritating.

You are probably right though…at this point, it is a little late to track them down.

Also, I wasn’t aware Cockrell had an auto-admit program. Could you elaborate?

If you’re in the top 2-3% or so you’re pretty much accepted into Cockrell. If you aren’t they holistically review you for admission. I got admitted from top 4%, but I’m not sure if it was “auto” admission or review admission, although it was within a month of applying.

It’s an unofficial auto-admit program then? Surely it’s not based strictly on rank though. I know of a lot of top 2-3 percenters who’ve gone nowhere near advanced math or science courses.
