I am a Chinese who was admitted by Duke eng, U of Toronto eng and U of Waterloo Computer Science. Duke is so expensive(around 50000 per year) while U of T and Waterloo is so cheap that virtually free(they offer me scholarships). However, Duke has better education, prestige and network. I am thinking of finishing my undergraduate years at U of T and applying to top American graduate schools. Is that smooth to get into American graduate school from Canada? Can you offer me some suggestions regarding my college decisions? Thx a lot.

What a coincidence! Two of my friends are just in your shoes. They are both accepted to Duke engineering. But it is too expensive. And now they are considering University of Toronto.

I suggest that you go to Toronto. Their engineering program is better than Duke’s engineering program. You can easily transfer to Ivy league from there. Duke ranks 28th for engineering. It’s not even worth paying so much money for just the reputation. Don’t be fooled by its name, Toronto and Waterloo offer the best engineering programs in Canada.

Good luck!

I am an UofT EE alumni and my S is accepted to Duke and UofT with UofT Scholar award.
We just visited Duke a few days ago. I don’t think that Duke’s Engineering is better than UofT except for BME with pre-med track. Duke has very good pre-med advising and study abroad program. UofT engineering program is quite heavy in the past. Duke only requires 34 courses for graduation while UofT, 20 years ago, required 48 courses. My S decided to attend Duke. For him, the cost difference between UofT and Duke is around 10K/year. My S has dual citizenships so that he can get good FA from Duke.

IMO, Duke engineering is not worth extra 40K/year. Save your money for graduate school. Good students from UofT or UofW have no problem getting in US graduate schools.

Then what about Duke’s prestige and network? They may be much better than UT’s and they will be really important in my future. Are they worth the 200k in all? I am still not sure…

You should be choosing between U of T and Waterloo. Both programs are top notch! I would choose the one where your interests lie…meaning major, since you got accepted to both schools for different majors.

In terms of ENGINEERING, I dont think Duke has better education, prestige and network.
