I want to major in either civil engineering or architecture and I know both these schools offer those programs. I'll be living on campus and want the whole college life experience. I guess what I'm asking is which college has the best 'college experience' and best academics?

I would visit the campus of both universities and sit in on the classes if possible. I’ve heard that both have high commuter populations since they are located in metro areas that attract students from the city, suburbs, small communities.

Have you checked to see what percentage of the student population is commuter at these two schools? Another way to look at the question if its not specifically answered on the website is to look up the total number of students living on campus, and compare that to total enrollment.

If you want the best engineering program and the best on campus experience at a public school in Texas, the easiest suggestion would be A&M.

UT Austin is perfect for architecture.

I’ve had more than a few friends go to UT Arlington and they say the hard science and engineering programs there are pretty solid. Academically that would probably the better choice imo. Some other things…

San Antonio > Arlington (there’s still tons to do in Arlington though), but DFW > San Antonio

only UTSA has football

UTA draws many local students who commute, but I visited recently and they’ve been building a bunch of new stuff… A lot of new dorm halls, a new engineering building, a fancy indoor arena, and tons of places to eat on campus with decent variety. I’ve never been to UTSA so maybe someone else can get back to you with that info.
