Hi I was wondering If anyone could tell
Me my chances for getting unto UT Austin cockrell engineering? Ok first of all, I'm an out-of-stater (Arkansas). I have a GPA of 3.85~3.9 I got a 31 on act and an 1850 in sat ( can I just translate my act score into a projected sat score, cause I did poorly on sat?) and I may have sat subject test scores for math 2, chemistry, and physics of at least 700. I'm ranked 2nd in my class right now but I may be able to fight my way up to 1st. My extra curriculars include martial arts classes, bible studies, youth group, and tutoring friends in pre-calculus. My hook is that I'm more than half-Mexican and my mother is a single mom who does not receive child support. Also I don't know if this will help but I was born in austin but moved as an infant and it's always been a desire of mine to return to my birthplace, you think they'll care about that? Lol ok Thnks for reading please respond with your opinion of whether I may make it in or not. Thank you!!

My hook is that I’m more than half-Mexican and my mother is a single mom who does not receive child support

That is not a hook. UT-Austin has a lot of Hispanic students. 21% are Hispanic.

Also, you’re OOS so UT isn’t going to help you with costs. They help instate kids.

Frankly, with your stats, you’re better off applying to…

1) UArk for merit

2) some mid-level privates that need more Hispanics and will give merit and need based aid.

3) Some OOS publics that will give you HUGE merit (UT is not one of them).

What is your major?

Chemical Engineering, do u recommend any other good chemical engineering colleges I may get into? I’m thinkin GeorgiaTech?

If you really want to go to UT for engineering then I would say you have about a 50% chance. That said let me go on to inform you that I have a TON of friends at UT engineering and I hear the same story day in and day out. Profs who dont care TAs who don’t try limited tools availible to help you when you need it and high drop out rate. I would highly suggest looking into UT Eng fairly well prior to saying that’s what you want to do.

What can you afford and what do you want in a school? Also you seem set on staying in the south would that be accurate?

Yes that’s accurate but honestly I’d go anywhere that has a good chemical engineering program.

What about the other part of the question - what can you afford???

If Midwest is not too cold for you, try Purdue. A good Engineering program. Also U of Wisconsin, or U of Minnesota.

I like to throw Rose Hulman into the mix for those that can afford the cost of going there and who dont mind a you got in now you need to prove that you deserve a degree type of school (as opposed to a you got in therefore you deserve to be here type).

*my mother is a single mom who does not receive child support.

I have a GPA of 3.85~3.9 I got a 31 on act and an 1850 in sat ( can I just translate my act score into a projected sat score, cause I did poorly on sat?)

It sounds like you’re low/lowish income. Do you know if your EFC will be 0 and you’ll qualify for full Pell?

Most out of state publics will NOT work because they don’t give need-based aid to help with their high OOS costs.

**GT, Purdue, UWis, and others like that will NOT work for you. **

There are some OOS publics that will give you big merit for your stats. You need to apply to some of those.

Folks…unless this student’s single mom can afford to pay tens of thousands every year for his college, most OOS publics and will NOT work. Many privates won’t work either unless they meet need.
