i have heard that admission to the University of Texas is very hard to get into from out of state. Is this true? And how much harder?

yea, its tough. i believe that 90% of the undergrads are from texas. make sure you're in the top 10%

if your in the top 4% of your class, youre almost guaranteed admission to UT even if your out of state

or could always have a really high SAT score like 1500.

Hard and getting harder each year. By law in Texas, the university must accept any in-state student that applies who is in the top 10% of his or her class (and that is regardless of what their test scores are). What has been happening is that the number of such top 10% students applying has been increasing each year which means the number that the college can otherwise take from the Texas student pool below that rank and out-of-state, has been decreasing each year and that trend is expected to continue for several more years.

We live in Texas but my son goes to boarding school in the NE. He will not be counted in the automatic 10% for Texas residents, even if he is 10% at his boarding school (which doesn't rank anyway). However, I suspect his scores/grades will be sufficient, coupled with in-state status, for him to be admitted. We can't count on it as a safety, though. Both Texas and A&M are NOT safety schools for Texans anymore. Many are turning to CU-Boulder as a safety. Karen
