UT Austin appeals 2022

I was rejected from UT Austin yesterday. Undergraduate studies undeclared
OOS
32 ACT
4.0 GPA W
Tons of EC etc.
I am so disappointed, I have heard some people have appealed and have gotten in. Does anyone know what exactly you can appeal for?

Someone correct me! Appealed process is into the different Major, not the Admission?

Good Luck.

I’ve got the same stats as you and good EC’s also. I’m seeing people with much worse stats getting in, and people with much better stats also getting CAP’d or rejected. I’ve never seen admissions so arbitrary. I really feel like none of us are special— plenty of high stat, overqualified kids got rejected. I am appealing too and hoping for the best but I don’t know how far it’ll get us. Btw, I was 7.9% in an extremely competitive high school. I’m still just amazed at my decision, frankly.

Is it common to get in via appeal?

whenever you were rejected from your program did they give you the option to choose your major from a different school?

@akessler no because I am OOS so I just got rejected and I applied undeclared to undergraduate studies

Were you a priority student or did you apply regular

@18class What was your class rank? Texas is crazy about that

Admissions for OOS is highly competitive. As you are admittedly undecided on a major, UT is likely not the best place for you. It is hard enough to get through in four years when you have a clear direction mapped out. Consider moving on to schools you have been accepted to. Good luck to you!

priority and I want to major in political science but I went in undeclared bc my counselor said that would give me best chances

Unfortunately, your counselor’s advice did not serve you well. UT prefers students that can demonstrate strong interest in their chosen field through their dedication to relevant ECs as well as the academic strengths and course selection to support their choice. And then essays to clearly state why you believe you want to major in that field.

It is a lot to ask 17 year olds. But this seems to be what helps UT to improve 4 year graduation rates.

My second child was rejected from UT austin. My first one is there now. We are OOS and our college counselor spoke with an admissions person last week and was told that they had more OOS applicants than they could handle to do any kind of “holistic review” and so they used class rank to deny a bunch ( including mine). Obviously I am
Disappointed for my family but I also think this will lead to a skewed admit group. Our urban east coast HS will probably not have any of the top 10% applying to UT- they are applying to ivies and SLAC and schools that give merit $. As a result- imho, UT is missing out in a more diverse and geographically different population. And I feel frustrated for these kids where the game was changed after they applied- class rank for Non auto admits was not a deciding factor before. Now even with excellent GPA and SAT/ACT, many are not even getting a passing review. I am aware that OOS at UTcwas never a shoe in but it’s too bad no one even read any of the application past class rank. In our city class rank just is not emphasized ( I know mine is in top quarter but I don’t even know his actual rank). It didn’t make me feel too promising for appeals but good luck!

I am still awaiting a decision from UT .I am an international applicant from India with class rank among the top 10% in the best school of the country which is know world wide
Major:Mechanical engineering
SAT :1280
GPA: 3.87/4 (calculating from the US grade system )
IELTS:7.5
Any Chances about moi (got in TAMU and ASU and hopefully purdue as well by the EOW

My S was denied last week from UT as Sports Mgmt. Strong grades and tons of EC. So, from all this discussion, all the wording on their admissions page about “holistic reviews” for students was BS? Totally agree with your summary thistlex33. I think most OOS aren’t looking at UT … I think the UT in-state top 6, 7, or 8% auto-admit is their competitive world, similar to UCLA here on the west coast… the OOS is probably in the top 10-25% range.

yeah I am in the top 20% of my class but we don’t do formal ranks just the honors roll. I got rejected tho

Hi- Current CAP student at UTA (to transfer into UT for Fall 2018)- Your counselor gave you bad advice. With UT’s 90% rule, the remaining 10% of admits are non-top-7% in-state students, OOS students, and international students… Your chances of OOS admission are incredibly low, and applying Undeclared was probably what threw your application out. If you really want to transfer to UT I’d consider applying as a transfer if you do very well your freshman year!

My nephew was in-state and appealed after he was rejected. He had outstanding ECs but wasn’t in the top of his class. We have quite a family history at the school - my dad was a prof there for 52 years and had a lot of connections. But even with all of that, my nephew was rejected. So it’s tough.

I’ve been reading these posts and I realized some people found out in early February. However, my friend and I both got our rejection letters today. Does that mean we made it past the initial cut of students and got a better in depth consideration? Or did they just do it in waves?

My son was rejected yesterday. OOS; top 2.5% of his class and ranked in top ten; 4.48 GPA W in full IB diploma program, so no fluff classes; great SAT score; plenty of EC, leadership and community service. From what I’ve read, sounds like his undeclared major status probably hurt him. Ridiculous…

We will not appeal, however. He has other great options closer to home.
