UT Austin ChemE vs GaTech ChemE

Accepted to ChemE programs at both elite schools, UT Austin (#4) and GaTech (#3). Both are OOS. Which one should I choose? Please advise.

You can’t go wrong. The cost difference is what? $5K/ year? If you are borrowing, that’s another $20K of debt.

Really it matters more the programs: the structure, the options, the profs. GaTech has a low 4 year graduation rate (~30?) and but pretty much everybody is done after 5 years- and most of them have had a long internship in the middle of it.

You can also consider where you would be happier! It’s a valid consideration when choosing between 2 top programs.

Thanks for the great advice.

Did you get a chance to visit either or both? I know at this point it won’t be possible if you haven’t. UT is a much bigger school with over 40K undergrads while GT has ~15K in Atlanta. It is more of a mid size school with all the big university sports and activities. From a pure engineering point of view I would give GT the edge as it is the more tech focused school and may give you better opportunities. They are both very good choices and, if you can, I would go most by how you felt on each campus. If not the just pick GT

I would much rather go to college in Austin than Atlanta.

Virtually all students at UT are from Texas. @ 50000 students it’s not elite, just hard for outsiders to get in.

That’s a little harsh, @Greymeer- and not accurate for engineering in general or ChemE in particular. And, fwiw, UT-A isn’t especially easy for Texans to get into either.

@greymeer do you even know what you and talking about ??? My son is in top 10% in Texas and has 1520 in SAT (Top 1%) and is on wait list. Please talk what you know and not your absurd opinions.

Both great options! I would look deeper into the industry ties for chem e for these schools. Where do students do their internships? Are there co-op opportunities? What are the career centers like? On campus recruiting?

I give the edge to GT but you really, really can’t go wrong.

@momofsenior1 . Thank you and all for your input.

Now I’ve a different (good) problem. Just got into Berkeley Chemical engineering program so I am torn between UT Austin (#4), GaTech (#3) and Berkeley (#2)
