Is there a thread for undergraduates applying for freshman admission to the fall of 2017? I didn’t see one so hopefully we can create one here. It would be awesome if we could start a discussion thread with any interests, concerns, questions about the university, etc. I submitted my Apply Texas application on August 1st and received my ID number for UTDirect on August 3rd. I finished my application that day and since then it has said that my app is complete and in review. My first choice major is International Relations and Global Studies in the College of Liberal Arts. My second choice major is Environmental Science in the Jackson School of Geosciences. My class rank is 13/362 so I will be auto admit. I have not applied for any honors programs, but at this point I don’t know if I will do so or not.
If UT is high on your list of colleges AND you would like to live on campus, now is the time to submit your housing application. I think the application fee is $50 and not refundable, but you will certainly get your first choice dorm. You look like a good candidate for Liberal Arts Honors. You should really apply. If you get accepted you have the option to decline it. Keep ALL options available at this time. Get it done quickly, before the Nov 1st (?) deadline. (It would allow you to get into the Honors Quad Dorms.) Good luck.
DD applied to UT Austin on 8/3 for aerospace. She is an auto admit. Housing app is done as well. Just waiting now.
So I can already apply for housing if I haven’t been accepted to the school yet?
@Jillian0203 Yes, you should apply for housing now if you want to live on campus. Go to the my status page and then there is a tab called housing. Fill out the info and have a payment method ready so you can complete it. Good luck!
I was told that the application has to be completed before you will receive the link to applying for housing. That which makes me very nervous because the rec letters and test scores won’t be in until late September.
@jedwards70 Thank you I’ll look into that right now!!
@realchk This link talks about steps to apply for housing. https://admissions.utexas.edu/apply/housing#fndtn-t48-before-you-apply
I hope that helps.
@realchk You should be fine applying for housing in September. I have a DD living on campus now, and she applied 10/14 of last year and still got her first choice dorm this year.
We applied for my son in mid-December, and he received his first choice in the honors quad. December might have been pushing it though…
So here’s another question. I’m going to apply for the liberal arts honors program. I know there are dorms specific to certain honors programs, but I don’t know if I’ll get into the honors program. So what do I do to apply for housing? Are we able to change our housing preferences? Should I apply for a regular dorm now and then try to switch into an honors dorm if I get in? Or apply for an honors dorm and switch somewhere else if I don’t get in? I just feel like that might be risky because if I don’t get into honors then the other dorms might be full.
@Jillian0203 You can change your housing selections up to July 1st. You can put honors dorms on your preferences now, and will be given priority if you’re admitted into LAH. The housing app works by you choosing your top 5 picks, and as long as you apply ASAP, you’ll likely get it regardless of how many times you change your preferences. Submitting an app saves your place in line.
My LHS submitted his housing app in August. He put Honors dorm as 1st priority and then the other 4 spots in the priority he hoped for if he didn’t get into Honors. You won’t be able to choose a specific Honors dorm, out of the 4 available in the Quad (one is freshman female only, fyi) but they are all fairly similar and of course share the Quad area. As stated above you have til July 1st to make changes, as decision come out most certainly before then, for all but the few on the college wait list.
So I just applied for housing, and this is what it says:
“You have a housing application.
If you are admitted and satisfy your enrollment deposit, you will be eligible for a housing contract offer and may enter housing preferences.
You may access your housing status online.”
I paid the $50 and answered the questions about my email, address, etc., and it asked me if my first and second choice housing would be single or shared space, but nothing else. Then it said my application was complete. I didn’t get the option to select which dorms I would want to live in in my top 5 preferences. Am I missing something, or when would I be able to choose these?
@Jillian0203 This page makes it look like you can’t select specific preferences until you’re admitted. I can’t say for sure, because I didn’t submit my deposit until I was admitted, but have a look at this.

@Jillian0203 - if I remember correctly- after you are admitted, make your final decision & you accept the enrollment offer-you will then be able to pay the $300 housing deposit. At that point you will complete your preferences- dorms, roommate, bath,…
But your housing priority was established yesterday, so you will have a very very good chance of getting your first choice dorm when the time comes.
Chance be please if you have time!

@NotSoPatient …wait, I’m confused. Are you saying she is an auto admit to the school in general or auto admit to aerospace?
I thought top 7% was guaranteed admission to the school but not necessarily to engineering or the major of your choice…and engineering is highly competitive. Is that right? (just trying to figure all this stuff out!)
Also…do the kids just scan in and upload their rec letters?
@carachel2 Sorry for the confusion. She is an auto admit to the University. She is waiting now, like everyone else who applied for engineering, to hear if she will be admitted to Cockrell School of Engineering. You are right that the top 7% are auto admitted to the University, and then everyone goes thru holistic review for their majors. You’re also right that engineering is highly competitive. And yes, she scanned and uploaded her rec letters just like my older daughter did last year (my older daughter is now a Longhorn so I know it is fine).
