Does anyone know how important class rank is compared to SAT scores for ChemE. I am currently the valedictorian of my class (281 students total) with a 1430 SAT score (below the 1466 average for the fall of 2015 ChemE).
@CroissantPhysicist According to CollegeData, class rank for UT is considered “very important” and test scores are just “important”.
Also could someone please chance me?

UT admits people into their major based on a formula that produces a point on a graph. This includes your rank and standardized test scores and also the admission officer’s ranking of the subjective part of your application (essays, resume, recs). If your point falls above the upward sloping line on the graph, you’re admitted.
@warrior101x
The rest of fall admissions for in state and OOS come out Friday.
Do you know of anyone that has had success with that strategy?
@backwood
is that confirmed? i’ve heard that some decisions will still come march 1st.
Will UT accept you into your 2nd choice major before your 1st? Or do you have to wait until you get denied by your 1st choice to find out?
@braves177 I know I have, but I wanted to know your thoughts.
@ad93107 haha kudos to your observation skills. Must say, they are commendable!
@colev22 You should direct this question to UT’s twitter (BeALonghorn) I don’t think many of us know the answer to that.
can someone rank the UT colleges in difficulty of admittance?
Does anyone know when UT releases financial packages? I was admitted in December, if that changes anything
@ehsstudent17 Last year it was in April or maybe the end of March. I’m trying to remember when my daughter got hers. They released all incoming Freshmen’s at the same time.
UT really irritates me with their “waves”. I am in state, not automatic, and have no idea when I’ll hear back in February. I’m guessing the 17th? What’s the chance it’s before / after then? Anyone have any insight to share. I know no one knows for sure, but based on the past, etc… I just want more information.
@nduclaunc I think you will have a good chance of hearing this coming Friday but if I remember correctly from last year the decisions came out all through the weekend starting Friday late afternoon. It was a huge release so I’m pretty sure you will hear this weekend if not before.
@ngyndiem is having four tabs a good sign?
My stats:- 1500/1600 (New SAT)
SAT Subject Tests:-
Phy:- 800
chem:- 800
Math 2 :- 800 (and a 760)
AP:- 5 on 5 AP’s (unfortunately being in India my classes aren’t AP classes so my W and UW GPA would be the same) (Subs:- CALC, PHYC,PHY1&2,CHEM)
Major:- Geophysics
I don’t have a clear GPA… I’m a US Citizen so that makes me OOS but I go to school in India where we don’t follow a GPA system)
I have straight A’s in 9th 10th and 12th Grade
But due to an insanely difficult internal grading system in 11th Grade 88.2% was my final score in 11th Grade.
Just on these stats alone what do you think my chances would be?
I’m considered to be the most annoying guy here, staying active most of the time lol
But I’ll give you my point of view on your stats anyway.
Your scores are simply amazing! The GPA with which you have applied for admissions will be considered to be the primary one when you’ll be compared to other candidates, in which case, I think, your grade eleventh’s. Then again, your stats alone should not suffice when UT takes into account other materials on your application. Given that your essays are concentrated on your major and your personal self, your resume is strong with relevant work experiences and ECs, your letters of recommendation are smooth, you should just wait and relax until the 17th of Feb.
Something that I have noticed is that UT looks at the list of your top 5 picked universities you’ve applied to or considering to apply to (you know, the ones you’ve put on your application profile while applying via applyTexas portal). My speculations say that those who’ve added universities much higher ranked than UT Austin are more likely to be subject to rejection, simply because of their excellent academic scores and high university preferences. In order to have a greater yield of enrollment, a university, more specifically UT, does not prefer students who would keep UT as a safe school.
Then again, that’s completely what I have concluded. I might be wrong. So, people no need of negative comments if your opinions oppose mine.
@sean191297 Where did you notice that UT knows what other universities an applicant has applied to? The only information they know about an applicant is the information an applicant has given them. Knowing where else an applicant has applied to would be an invasion of privacy.
Yield protection doesn’t exist. It’s a myth. Ask any admission officer or their blog’s or just straight up ask them on reddit. Imagine an admission officer seeing a great applicant and thinking “wow! This person would do awesome here!” and then denying them purely for the reason of yield protection.
There’s a reason why applicants are viewed holistically. If an applicant has great academic stats and is rejected, it’s most definite due to other parts of his or her’s application. The student might have shotgunned the essay simply because they thought that they would get in because of their academics. If you look at UT’s admission formula, you can tell that essay is a huge factor.
Another factor could be a letter of recommendation where a teacher writes a bad one. It’s rare but it exists.
Regardless, this is an interesting take on why some academically qualified applicants might be rejected, but they were most likely denied or waitlisted due to other parts of their application.
So will I also hear this week about if I get in to my first or second choice major? Or just the school itself?
