Didn’t they stop using the AI?
@Dearspy I would be surprised if they changed too dramatically after spending years defending their methodology in court. Where did you read that they changed?
@gettingschooled I may be wrong but I felt that if they claim to do a holistic review this would kind of be the exact opposite?
In various places, they have said the PAI component is what makes the process holistic. Aside from adjustments to AI for recentering of SAT or changing for things like not requiring writing, etc. it seems like changing too much from the process they spent millions of dollars successfully defending in court would expose them to new challenges in court.
Did any o/s or international students receive their decisions yet??
@Chipotlegurl28 I’m OOS applying to BHP (submitted 10/31), haven’t heard anything yet.
@Chipotlegurl28 I am OOS applying to CNS (submitted my app 10/29), have not been informed yet… I check my portal at least 3 times a day
This morning I was talking to a friend, whose D got into McComb last year. The interesting part was that she was not in 7%; did not apply for BHP and got admission within a month in the first wave before ThanksGiving. Few remarkable things that could have helped her is the summer program in a top university and a leadership in student council. UT seems to look for key words in app and picks for priority review.
@ Bader316 Interesting…any idea what her test scores were? Also, what was her class rank and is she at a highly competitive school?
@Mills6 I did not ask for exact rank and scores etc. She was in 10% rank. Among other things, she was busy all year tutoring math/english to young kids.
That AI formula can still be excellent if test scores are high enough… and 10% isn’t very much below 7% plugging into that formula. The more I look at information the more I think their methodology makes sense. They certainly have to figure out some way to equalize the schools and test scores from a very competitive high school are usually higher even when class rank is lower.
@Mills6, Yes she passed from a competitive Plano school. All I know she was a good student, but not top performing. I think the UT method of holistic review frustrates many top students, and this could be the reason why BBA class profile is only 3.46 average GPA and 1324 average SAT.
Hope I get accepted (OOS Student)
Cumulative GPA: 4.26
Rank: 10/653
Major: Biology (CNS)
Volunteer Hours: 300 (Worked at my local hospital)
SAT: 1310
@Bader316 yes, it is frustrating… but class rank being so important is frustrating also. I would say test scores and GPA are so low because UT has to take kids with weaker stats who are in the top 7% at schools that aren’t as competitive personally. Schools are very different and choosing classes starting in middle school to make sure your rank is high enough at some schools is just sad. The three highest ranked students at the school I taught at last year all avoided the hardest class(AP Chem) and ones (art, band, etc) they were interested in for their rank. ( Number one made a 32 on ACT and number 2 made a 31.) Some people are even choosing schools that aren’t as difficult for the almighty class rank. Just being in the top 7% does not necessarily make you the best student for UT. My daughter is only top 10% but she has made all A’s and A+ (Two lowest grades were 92’s) in all the top classes at her school. However, she has chosen to be a leader and extremely involved in other areas (student government, art, sports, volunteering, job, etc) so has gotten more 96’s than 99’s throughout. So, although she tested very well (34 ACT…of course the top 15-20% of her school made 34+) ) and made all A’s, she isn’t “top performing.” I think (hope!) UT’s system will allow someone like that to get in. Glad I am not having to choose…just too many strong candidates!
@Mills6, So far I know, students take Alg and Spanish I in Middle school to have enough time in high school to complete advance math courses. It is not gaming the system rather complete college level courses and save money later, and most importantly show the strength in academics like Calc AB, BC. Even some try to game the system, 7% rule should be maintained at UT and not put bunch of them into Auto-admit general studies group, CAP, PACE.
If GPA is low because of less competitive school, why would SAT falls to 1324 in AI calculation? My take is that UT is overriding AI with PAI or holistic evaluation. Other than essay, there is no numerical value for each component of PAI, so evaluation could be personal and biased.
A 6% drop in rank reduces AI by 0.2
A 100 drop in SAT-M reduces AI by .2
So theoretically, a student with 93 percentile rank with 1600 SAT == a student with 99 percentile rank, 1500 SAT with Math 700.
This clearly can not explain why SAT falls to 1324 unless significant number of people are admitted outside 7% rank.
A student with 93 percentile from a less competitive school has to maintain a decent SAT to be competitive on AI scale. So SAT should not fall to average 1324 because of less competitive school.
Does anyone know if it is true that decisions are released on the third Thurs or Fri in Nov, Dec & Jan?
Has anyone been accepted to McCombs yet?
@Mom1997 Historically, yes on Nov and Dec but more frequently in January than once it seems (although biggest group is the day) and the final group third week of February. No one knows if that applies this year until people start posting here later in the week. November is usually very light though.
@funtimes123 No one has posted yet so guessing no. Those who got interviews in BHP thread have not heard either and they usually hear early.
Thx!
