UT Austin Cockrell School of Engineering - International Student

Background: International Student, female, Indonesian, Muslim (?? lmao), I went to two separate places for high school - a local school in Indonesia (for 9th grade), and an international IB school in Luanda, Angola (for 10th, 11th, 12th)

SAT: 1870 (700M, 580CR, 590W) - I’m really bad at standardized tests D:
SAT2: Didn’t take
TOEFL: 112
GPA: Don’t have one. School doesn’t rank, we have a graduating class of 18 STUDENTS, and I’m the second best student I think. So top 11%? lmaooo

In Indonesia I only took the subjects of the curriculum set by the Indonesian government, and when I moved to Angola it is an IB school so in 10th grade I took MYP subjects. Also when I moved to Angola I had to re-do 10th grade because of the stupid age cut-off, so that is why when I list my ECs there are activities that I took in Indonesia for two years from 9-10th grade.
My IB subjects are Maths HL, Chem HL, Physics HL, Economics HL, English SL, Spanish AB Initio

I haven’t received my predicted grades yet but at the end of last year my grades were:

6 Maths HL
7 Chem HL
6 Phys HL
5 Economics HL
7 English SL
7 Spanish AB Initio

So total 37 points and I’m pretty sure I’m going to get those extra 3 points from TOK and EE.

Awards:
Competed in Physics and Biology Olympiad, won a bronze medal in 10th grade for Biology labwork
A Principal’s Honor Roll and multiple Director’s Honor Roll (school awards)
Subject Awards in Science (MYP), Spanish (MYP), Art (MYP), TOK (DP), Chem (DP) (school awards)
Duke of Edinburgh International Silver Award
Top 10 National Exam in School (out of ~400 students) (9th grade in Indonesia)

(idk they all suck)

Co-founder of 30 Days of Change - fundraising organization which aims to raise money to buy books for schools throughout Angola. First run we managed to raise over USD$3000 (11-present)
Teaching English for a daycare in Angola (11,12)
Mostly fundraisers by the Student Council - for example we held an impromptu fundraiser to help the victims of the Lobito flood in Angola and gathered over 90 boxes of food, clothes, water.

I would join things related to science such as a robotics club, etc but we dont have cool things like that here - due to the really small amount of people and the difficulty of things getting to Angola - for example, I’m in my last year of high school and we don’t even have the Pearson books with the new curriculum yet, that we ordered a year and a half ago (really makes me wonder why we don’t just invest in electronic textbooks)

I participated in a summer program which is basically a compressed version of the year-long introductory engineering class at Johns Hopkins University - I received the maximum 3 credit hours (not sure what it’s called or how it works)

For the essays:
Topic A: Gonna write about how being in a student council with lots of people having different principles and way of approaching things and having to work with them, OR leading a debate club and controversial topics (THATS something to write about)
Topic B: Gonna write about difficulty of moving to the US while I was in 4th grade and not knowing how to speak English
Topic C: Just gonna try my best to connect my activities to my passions

I’m gonna apply as Electrical Engineering (first choice) and Chemical Engineering (Second choice)

I’m also applying to:
Texas A&M
Georgia Tech
Purdue
Penn State
NUS (singapore)
University of Toronto
Stanford (maybe LMAO)

Please be honest and give advice if you want to!!!

UT won’t happen with that SAT score. Not as an international. A&M, maybe.

@danfer91 Won’t happen with Cockrell or UT in general? Do SAT scores really matter that much to them?

@geegeehan Cockrell. For OOS and International applicants SAT/ACT scores are very significant. The applicant pool is extremely competitive, and you wouldn’t get in even if you were in state, so being an international applicant is very tough.
