UT Austin Cockrell school of engineering?

I'm going to be a senior in high school in fall 2011 and I really want to be a petroleum engineer at cockrell at ut austin. My SAT is English-620 math-760 writing-680. My ACT composite is 31. My GPA is 97.2 and I'm about 90 out of a class of 711 at Southlake Carroll (#2 rated school district in Texas). I'm taking AP Spanish, AP Calculus BC, Dual credit English, AP physics c, football and a couple blow off classes to fill my schedule because I'm taking gov and econ in the summer. Any thoughts about my admission chances?

Obviously, it’s a plus you are taking rigorous courses at a top Texas HS. It’s a pretty big minus you are top 13%. Cockrell doesn’t even take all auto admits. Knock 'em dead with your essays, resume and rec letters!

As a Longhorn, it hurts to say it, but TAMU has an outstanding petroleum engineering program!

Thanks for the help! I understand top 13% isn’t fantastic, but the university doesn’t see class rank outside the top 10%, so they have no clue what my rank is. Do you think my teat scores are strong enough?

Hi, cspen11,

Actually, class rank beyond the auto admit figure (it is 9% for your 2012/2016 admission cycle) is very important to UT.

Your application will be evaluated under their holistic review process, which includes two calculations: Academic Index (rank, SAT/ACT and fractional bonus if you exceeded standard HS curriculum) + Personal Achievement Index (essays, EC’s and all the rest).

Please see the detailed explanation on pages 4-5 of this report:
http://www.utexas.edu/student/admissions/research/HB588-Report13.pdf

As you read along, pay attention to footnotes 6-9 (at the end of the long report). You can pretty much calculate your AI by using the formula at footnote 9 for engineering, plus adding the rigorous curriculum bonus, if applicable.

Basically, because your AI is pretty well set at this point, the factors to focus on now are the things in the PAI column that can make you shine. That’s why I said rock your essays, put together an outstanding resume, etc. Tere is a sample resume + a lot of helpful information about the resume on the Be A Longhorn site. [Expanded Resumes | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/freshmen/admission/resume)

Good luck!

PS

I may have misunderstood your comment about class rank. Some Texas high schools have dropped ranking altogether or below the top 8-10%. If that is what you are talking about, i.e., that you will have no official rank, then pay attention to the footnote about class rank where it states UT will assign you an estimated rank…just cannot escape the whole ranking thing with UT!

Also, will your summer course work be included in any rank your school makes? Obviously, do your best no matter what, and hopefully, that will boost your position a little!
