Hello guys. I recently was accepted into UT for economics. I was wondering if anyone could provide me more insight into the econ program at UT in terms of difficulty, coursework, job prospects, reputation and any opinions on the best program(business and econ, math and econ track, econ honors, econ-mpa). Im thinking of obtaining a Master's in Finance or an MBA. Any info. is appreciated! Thank you.

I had a teacher who was a McCombs alumni tell me that, in the state of Texas, UT Econ majors are perceived as business school dropouts, and thus employment prospects for Econ majors from UT who don’t plan to go to grad school is not as high in the lone star state.

Oy, I hate to hear this.

I have a potential UT student who has a good shot at McCombs, Texas resident top1% 2000+SAT, but would really be a better Econ major. He is good at math and would be a great Econ/Math guy. Business wouldn’t let him tap his strengths as much.

There was a McCombs guy here awhile ago who had some good insights into the differences.

That’s interesting. I guess I’m really gonna have to go to Grad. Any other opinions?

It’s humorous that econ is supposedly easier than business. Anyways, Texas has a great math dept, but a subpar econ dept. If you’re thinking about a PhD or MA/MS just get a BS in math from UT with a minor in econ.

Let’s get some more insight into the Econ program at UT. What is job placement like, what opportunities do econ majors have, do they have more flexibility in studying abroad? What is the the future looking like for prospective econ grads?

Get a math major and econ minor, it’s the best option. Sets up grad success and quant hedge fund success.

I would do math maybe as a minor but I don’t think I have the math skills to really do well and have a high GPA.
