UT Austin Honors 2019 CNS - Turing and Deans

Does applying late have any effect on honors application? I mean, I can’t understand why I got rejected to honors; I mean I’m soo passionate; I work beyond the scope and beyond what is given at school; I finished undergrad Organic chemistry and other crap

Truthfully there’s always a chance the committees notice how close to the deadline you submit. I mean, if your rec letters trickle in that’s normal. But submitting everything the day of the deadline will be hard to overlook when comparing to everyone else who applied. What was your class rank? Did you have any Science ECs? (Sry don’t know what Olympiad is)

TheAnomalist: Dean’s Scholars had a 2.5% acceptance rate this year. Don’t worry too much about it.

Yeah idk about honors.
Rejected from Turing and Dean’s
ranked 9/98 (our top 10 has a GPA range from 4.22-4.295)
SAT: 2370
ACT: 36
Those are the objective stats at least. Is there an appeals process bc I have a bunch of new info since I applied.

Denied from Turing :frowning: Oh well, that’s disappointing. If people are interested for stat comparison: 3.72 UW, 2340 superscore, 2250 single, 790 Math II, 730 Bio, 5 AP CS, great essays and ECs (including TA for school’s CS class).

@Austinwannabe‌ congrats.
Wow. That’s really surprising. People with 2300 hundred SAT, 36 ACT denied from Turing.
And here I am with a 32, opening Mystatus everyday in the hope…
Lol haven’t heard from Turing but no point checking now.

Does anyone know what’s the graduation rate for Turing?
Someone told me only 50 odd people graduate with Turing!

Oh yeah, just checked and was denied as well. I’m at least going to try to do honors courses and get in after the first year.

And @PCMguy I’ve heard that in the program a bunch of people get out because they don’t want to do an honor’s thesis when they’re going to graduate. Also, about 100 people get in with a yield of about 50, so that doesn’t surprise me.

My D applied for Dean’s before the priority date and she did not get accepted to any of the CNS honors. She had good stats and i was pretty confident that she would make it to either Dean’s or Health Science. Does anyone know if UT considers the applicant for all Honors program within the school, even though he/she applied for a particular honors program?

Here is her stats;

GPA - 4.769 (Weighted) 4.0 (UW)
Class Rank - 9/985
SAT - 2370
SAT Bio - 800, SAT Math - 730, SAT Chem - 740
7 AP exams - four 5s and three 4s
US Biology Olympiad - Semifinalist
National Merit Semifinalist
Science Olympiad (all 4 years) - tons of medal in Regionals, State and Nationals
National Spanish Exam - Twice gold medalists and one time silver medalist
Summer Research experience
Summer Internship at Clinic
200+ volunteering hours

Her class rank was 4/1021 (GPA 4.8) in her midyear report. She did send her midyear report…however i doubt they would have considered.

I don’t know what else she could have done. We are really disappointed. Now got to wait until end of March for decisions from other schools that she has applied

wait darn I haven’t heard back from Dean’s yet (submitted 11/30 and heard back from Turing last month)… it still says my application is “under review”

@dad22 from Texas? Or OOS? Was she rejected from UT completely? Or just CNS Honors? Her stats and ECs are impressive.

@dad228 Is your D in-state or OOS? Secondly which was her first preference in honors Dean’s or HSS. I heard in one of the information sessions, that they look at research experience for Deans scholars(especially for sciences like bio, chem etc). It was mentioned in those sessions that if your first choice is, say Deans, and second is HSS. They look at HSS first choice students first before considering you for HSS. And for HSS they said they look for volunteering in health related areas. I know a case, with SAT 2400 and in top ten out of 600+ was offered polymathic honors, though that student’s first choice was Deans.

Having said that, it is shocking to see that a student like your D with such an impressive stats did not make it to Honors list.

I was supposedly rejected from CS and Turing last week, but I check again today and it said I was accepted (CS). Still rejected from Turing. A bit odd indeed.

@FloMoMom‌ We are in Texas. She was auto admit and she got the major she wanted.

@CollegePapa She applied only for Dean’s. I don’t think there was option to select second choice in Natural Science honors application. Somewhere in the honors website I remember to have read that applicants will automatically be considered for other honors program in Natural science school. She has indeed done quite a bit of volunteering in hospitals and clinics. She did some research during summer of her Sophomore year. Maybe that wasn’t enough for them to consider her for Dean’s.

My son’s MyStatus says he is being reviewed for CNS honors. No acceptance letter yet and no rejection letter either. He applied into Dean’s Scholars. He was just assigned his major last week, and was an auto-admit. Anyone else still in review?

@dad228 Sorry. My D was saying that there was no second choice. Some of my earlier comments came from what I recall from a summer info session we attended at UT.

@dad228 one good thing about CNS honors is that one can try and get honors choice they want after getting admission in freshman or further years, unlinke plan II.

I’m still in review @collegefind

@dad228 From what I know, there are still a couple CNS open sessions for admitted students in March and mid-April. Unless CNS has indicated the selection for honors is complete or a letter to the negative was sent, there may still be hope.

@DVA6102 If you are talking about Honors status on status-web page, it is not indicative of actual status. It is either saying your application is incomplete etc and when you press details tab in honors, it states application is complete and it is in review. This status has not changed for ages even for the people who have been offered admission to honors.

@collegePapa‌ hi I’m an international admitted to CS at UT. I applied for Turing but haven’t heard back yet.
The honors status, as you stated, has not changed and shows the application is in review.
How shall I be informed about the decision? Their website says theyll send an email and the status shall change on Mystatus.
