UT Austin Housing Questions

Hi all, I would like for this to be a thread for questions about the housing process at UT

To start, I have a few questions:
When is the latest one can apply for housing and still get into Jester? If it helps, I applied on the 12th.
A rough idea of when each dorm is full would be awesome; for example, during my visit I was told San Jac isn’t an option unless you apply by October, roughly.

Also, when can I expect a contract? I know they only last for a limited time, and I’m hoping that mine won’t expire before I hear back from a few other schools (I have paid the enrollment deposit; I’m pretty sure I’ll attend but don’t want to be forced to decide before I know about the others because of housing).

Thanks!! Congrats to the class of 2020

@thenoah6624 After you accept your offer of admission and pay the $200 enrollment deposit, you will be eligible to receive a housing contract. You have about 10 days to accept your housing contract when they email it to you. You may cancel your submitted housing contract prior to Mooov-In, but the advance payment is refundable only to admitted freshmen who decide not to enroll at the university and visit MyStatus to decline their offer of admission no later than May 1.

You can accept your housing contract whenever it comes, and still receive a refund if you change your mind and decide not to attend UT. Just be sure to cancel by May 1 to get your advance payment back. Students who attend UT and choose to live off campus are not eligible to receive a refund of the advance payment.

For those who think they may want to live in Callaway House please note they have a process that caught some people by surprise last year.

If you signed a lease and then decide not to live there, you can find someone previously unknown to Callaway to take your place. This means no one from the waitlist. Last year, the people on the waitlist were trying to get in and there were people trying to get out of their lease but they could not trade with each other. Callaway uses the waitlist to fill the slots of those who get out for a valid reason (not attending a school in Austin).

If you don’t have something by May 1, there will be people willing to have you replace them on the Callaway lease. It will work as long as you are not already on the wait list. I would assume Castillian works the same way since they are both owned by the same company.

Anybody know if I can somehow bring my own mini fridge into Jester? I know we’re only supposed to have the one provided, but I’d like to keep my own food separate.

You can refer to this handbook to see a long list of banned items, including mini-fridge :frowning:
http://www.utexas.edu/student/housing/pdfs/ResidenceHallManual2015.pdf

Maybe I missed it but “mini-fridge” is neither on the Approved or Banned list. Bringing your own Microwave is Banned, but it doesn’t say anything about mini fridges. To UT’s intent, I don’t “think” they want them since they can draw a lot of current and over load circuits, but i didn’t see it in the document link (Thanks for the link @helicopter8 )

@TXDad56 , yes you are right that mini-fridge is not in the banned list, but if you look at page 43 of the document, it said this:

Refrigerator
“Only MicroFridge ® units provided by DHFS are permitted…”

I cannot imagine where it can be placed. Dorm rooms are usually tiny.

I have a question! I have a contract but I haven’t sent in the agreement. I got an email that said “pending cancellation”. It’s due in two days and I don’t know if I should fax or email it. Which would be faster?

@PeachyKhaleesi What did they recommend in the email? If it doesn’t matter, I would scan and email the housing contract.

I’m not 100% sure, but I believe they told me at an information session that the contract will be valid as long as it is postmarked on or before the expiration date. Regardless, I recommend you scan it, email/fax it, then send it in the mail. That way you have proof if it is lost in the mail.

Jester West 9th floor boiiiiiiiiiiiiii

I had the chance to room in Jester for a week because I attended a camp called Texas Boys State. Overall, not bad, but 7th floor and up (from what I recall) have bigger, better rooms. I was in a 3rd floor dorm and tbh the room was so tiny, even for college standards. Plus, there was a public bathroom which was shared by the whole floor. I guess you get what you pay for. Just wanted to share my experience in case someone finds it informative.

Kinda off topic but you guys were so lucky! Girls state stayed at texas lutheran in seguin. If I got lost at that small school I can imagine how lost I’ll get at UT

Does anyone know when we’ll find out what dorm we’ll be staying in? I already submitted the housing contract and all that stuff.

@michaelam867 Housing assignments start going out in late July.

@michaelam867 Not until July

I’m having similar worries… I haven’t received my housing contract but I really want to live on campus freshman year. If it comes down to it, I don’t really care what dorm I’m in. Are my chances good?

@universeofbooks when did you send in your housing application and the $50 deposit?
