So I will be attending UT Austin for the 2012 year, and i just had a question about how internet works at UT dorms. I read online that you get 5 GB/week, so what happens if you go over your limit? Also, is this just at your dorm, or does this apply all across campus, like the library and classes?
Thanks for your help

All students get 500mb of usage a week. Resnet allows you to purchase additional data usage on top of this. When you go over, your internet speed is just downgraded to something like 1/4 of the normal (fast) speed. Also, all utexas.edu websites do not count against your data usage.

Oh, and the entire campus is blanketed with the same wifi that you log in to with your UT EID and password. I have yet to find a student area that does not have wifi. I think that’s pretty cool :)

Would you happen to know how fast the internet is (either wireless, wired or gigabit capable network port)?

Maybe some tangile information like:
[Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test](http://speedtest.net/)

If you live on campus, you get 5 GB/week for free, and you can purchase additional weekly bandwidth. Internet speeds are around 50-150 Mbit/s on wired, 20-50 Mbit/s on wireless. If you go over the limit, you’ll get knocked down to a lower-tier internet service which is super slow, or you have the option to purchase more bandwidth.

I didn’t want to make a new thread but I want to know if it’s wise to use private torrent trackers like what.cd with the UT wi-fi.

Just don’t torrent at UT, regardless of private trackers… it’s not a good idea even if anyone tells you otherwise. I mean, don’t torrent in general, but I know that no one is going to follow that advice.

Oh alright, thanks for the info Soadquake :D
