I am an international student who has been accepted into the McCombs School of Business at UT Austin. I will be applying to the Business Honors Program next year (I found out about it after the deadline to apply to it had passed).
I will likely choose Accounting as my major (I eventually want to qualify as a CPA). Since UT Austin has arguably the best undergraduate Accounting program in the country, will it be worth the out-of-state tuition? Will I have good employment opportunities?
I don’t know how the Accounting programs are at your state colleges, so I don’t know the tuition difference, but I can tell you the Accounting program at UT is second to none. The MPA program is #1. In 5 years you get a Masters of Professional Accounting degree, a Bachelors in Accounting, and sit for the CPA. In addition the Big 4 (and others) aggressively recruit MPA students. You won’t have to sit around wondering how to get Big 4 interviews. They come to campus, have job fairs, hold recruiting events, have on-campus interviews, and then interviews at their offices. You can also get Big 4 interviews in offices in other states, such as CA, NY, etc. They want the MPA’s so they will let you request the location you want for the internships. Also the internships are built into the curriculum, so one semester is basically the internship. Same with sitting for the CPA, its basically built into the program. As I said, without knowing the Accounting Schools in your state, its impossible to say “its worth it”. However my experience is that the program is fantastic and I don’t see how any other program could be better.
