UT Austin or Michigan?

How does UT Austin compare with University of Michigan, Ann arbor in engineering? (I cant seem to find UT's rank anywhere)

according to USNews 2006
Michigan is 6 over all. UT is 11th overall.
1. MIT
2. Stanford
UC Berkeley
4. CIT
U of Ill.- Urbana Champaign
6. Georgia IT
UM- ANn Arbor
8. CMU
Cornell
Purdue Univ.- West Lafayette
11. UT- Austin

what specialty within engineering are you inquiring about?
in Chemical, neither UT nor michigan made the top 5.
in civil, UT is 4th.
in double E, michigan is 5.

my opinion is you can't go wrong w/ either. i'm biased. hook 'em!

If you are in-state at either, go with that one. Otherwise, I'd decide based on atmosphere. The schools are more alike than they are different, I think.

Yeah, i'd go with whichever one is cheaper. Also, as kcirsch said, check out the atmosphere at both schools, although their atmospheres are similar. I gotta say though, UT has a great alum base and is a lot of fun. If you try hard at either school, you'll do well in your career.

suppose computer science. How does ut rank in that?

there is no ranking in US News for comp sci, but comp engineering is prob the closest to that field:
the top five in comp engineering(according to US News 2006):
1. MIT
2. Stanford
3. CMU
UC- Berkeley
5. U of Ill- Urbana Champaign.

on a personal note about comp sci. my bro is doing comp sci at carnige mellon, and supposedly, that's the best for comp sci. he was debating between CMU and UT, but CMU won out b/c CMU is just ranked higher. i'm not sure about UT vs. UM. but if you're from texas, you can't go wrong w/ UT. hook 'em. Gosh i'm so biased. lol.

no I am not texan but intrnational. How about choosing bet ucsd and ut austin or penn state for CS thnx

it really depends on what you're looking for in a school
you've got one from california, one from texas, and one from pennsylvania. that's about as diverse as you can get (west coast, south, east coast). in terms of rankings: ucsd is 32, penn state is 48, and UT is 52, nationally. (us news and world reports)
in terms of overall engineering programs: UT is 11, penn state is 18, and ucsd is 22. (us news and world reports)

but take rankings for what they're worth. you really have to visit the school to see which one is the right fit. if that's not possible, contact the schools and see if they can send you a viewbook. good luck!

If UT Austin and Michigan are closely ranked in the engineering field that you are interested in, go visit both campuses and see which one you like better. The environments are totally different.

UT Austin's engineering school is in older buildings on the main campus, integrated into the rest of UT.

Michigan engineering school is located on North Campus (along w/ the Music and Architecture schools) and in facilities that have built within the last 30 years. The drawback is that it is located several miles away from the main campus but connected by commuter buses.

The difference is like living in the city vs. living in the suburbs.

You can't go wrong with either. It's more of a matter of personal preference. Since you will be spending fours years of your life there, spend the time and money to check both out - talk to profs and students - and then decide.

wildrider I am from uae as well and we are looking at ut austin.Basically frm India

UT is TOPS in Computer Science - go there over Michigan if that's your major.

UT has a better ranking than Michigan in Computer Science???
