I’ve been accepted as a transfer student to both schools and I’m deciding between them. I’d be a telecommunication media studies major at TAMU or an advertising major at UT Austin. I know they’re both really good schools so I’m having a really tough decision because I want to make the best decision for me since I didn’t like the school I was at previously. What should I do??
They have very different cultures, I assume you are OOS? What do you know about either? What didn’t you like about your other school?
I am from the D/FW area, but I went to OU for my freshman year of college and didn’t like it. I honestly only applied to OU when I was a senior in high school because I fell in love with the campus. I became disenchanted with it during my freshman year and was so unhappy (due to an array of reasons including administration issues/scandals), also didn’t want to be paying out of state tuition since I was so unhappy.
My brother actually went to TAMU so I know a good amount about the school and I’ve visited countless times, even been to a couple of football games. Don’t know much about the UT Austin campus and I’ve never taken a tour.
I wasn’t sure about TAMU’s telecommunication media studies major and how it would rack up against UT’s advertising major. I thought TAMU’s telecommunication media studies major would be good for me because I wasn’t completely in love with the idea of being an ad major and it’s a broader major, but at the same time I’m worried it’s not as good as UT’s ad major. I know TAMU is more engineering, comp sci, STEM related majors, so I am worried since I’m not a STEM major.
Here’s another point unrelated to academics but deserving of consideration. What type of housing will you need? On-campus housing at UT is limited and apartment/condo rentals near campus are very expensive. Cost of living in the Austin city limits is extremely expensive, all around. I would assume that housing in College Station would be much more reasonable.
@cgpm59 is 100% correct. Both my nephew and my cousin were in same position @turtlelover123 we also live in the DFW area and they were both transfer applicants accepted to UT & TAMU…the cost of living in Austin is outrageous. They both got apartments in brand new built buildings with all the bells and whistles for $550-$600/mo in College Station whereas in Austin it would have been $1000/mo.
Both are thriving at TAMU and absolutely love it.
They are both great schools, I guess it depends on the vibe you’re wanting and affordability…best of luck, I’m sure you’ll do great no matter where you end up!
They are both great schools but each has a different culture. You really need to visit both campuses to see which one fits your needs better. A&M is a campus in a college town were the students are more conservative. UT has a urban campus with a more liberal base. You have experience with A&M and should visit UT to be able to compare the two.
this! ^^^
Both are amazing schools and congrats for getting accepted. However, I personally think the journalism/advertising/media at UT is better and there would be more opportunities for internships in Austin.
Have you considered UNT? Their Journalism faculty is pretty good.
