I am a Texas resident and have been accepted as undecided at both Tulane and UT Austin (Probably will end up as an Economics or a Business major, hoping to go to Law school afterwards). Paying the same amount of money as both schools roughly (35k scholarship with Tulane would just about equal my instate fees for UT Austin).

Looking for the school that will guide me better for a graduate education/degree (more specifically Law school but also other professional programs as well -- ties in with the age old private vs public school question?), that has great and well rounded academics, a strong career center/internship opportunities, things to do in the city, safety, and a great alumni network and job network. I have visited the Tulane campus twice this past year and I really really adore it very much and I have seen the UT Austin campus many times and I really enjoy the urban vibe there as well. I can see myself at both places to be honest and satisfied as well.

There are some personal doubts and myths that need to be answered and debunked and I need your help. The class size at UT Austin is what is overwhelming me and throwing me off a tad bit (from what I have heard -- mainly from my parents but I think and hope they are really exaggerating). Also is it true that the professor accessibility is near impossible at UT Austin and that professor's in fact don't really "care" to put in the time to help the students?

Can anyone help me with this dilemma? Any help is really appreciated since the deadline to commit is a week away!

Thanks!

spt, the following thread was specifically about engineering, but I did address some of your questions in it. For me, the class size was NOT an issue. Anyway, read the thread and let me know if you have other questions. By the way, my dad did spend quite a bit of time e-mailing the student in the thread, and even found a Texas Ex in his country who was willing to answer questions! My son has found the profs to be very accessible - you just have to make the effort to go to their office hours!!

In state tuition at UT will always be there for you but the 35K scholarship you received at Tulane is a one-time opportunity. I’d pick Tulane. You could transfer to Texas if you don’t like Tulane. (The students who I know who have gone there really love Tulane.)

The financial situation is equal since Tulane’s COA is about 60,000 and UT’s would be about 25,000. The scholarship simply offsets it. Taking that into consideration there is simply no way I would choose Tulane over UT. It is a school known for snobby, rich kids and some professors who are the same. The national name recognition is much higher for UT-Austin and the overall experience at UT is hard to beat. Plus, take a look at this comment from a Tulane alum:

“I graduated in 1999 with a BSM in Finance. Overall, I regret attending Tulane. The university’s name does not hold weight when looking for a job. The Career Development Center at Tulane is very poor and not helpful.”

On the other hand, browsing through comments from Tulane students it seems that a lot of them do love it there, with a small portion of dissenters.
