I recently just got into UT Austin McCombs (business school), however, since I plan on majoring in accounting later on, I was wondering what requirements there are to get into the accounting program? I also got a full ride to UT Dallas accounting program, so the reason I'm debating between these two schools is because I'm afraid it's going to be very difficult to get into accounting at UT Austin, and I may not get what I want. I want to go to UT Austin, but UT Dallas might be a better option for me, money wise and education wise, so I want to know all the details before I make my decision. And yes, I do know that UT Austin is a better school, but how much does that actually impact me in the future when I'm searching for a job? How much do companies care about where you graduated from? Also, I've heard that it's more expensive to major in accounting at UT Austin. Is that true? If so, how much more would it be for in state tuition? Thank you!

My friend got full ride at UTD (included dorm), but she chose UT even though UT only offered her one year academic scholarship. Last time i talked to her, she was very satisfied with her choice.

I don’t know the exact costs but UT Austin is the better choice and you don’t need to pay out of state tuition. UT Austin is regarded to be academically superior to UTD and therefore, recruitment is higher from UT Austin than UTD. I would go with UT Austin and congratulations for getting into McCombs.

Well… look at the pros and cons for yourself and decide.

UTA - upper 40s for accounting graduate
UTD - lower/mid 40s

UTA - more heavily recruited, especially by the big 4
UTA - higher hiring rate (by how much is unknown, i’m guessing 10-15%)
UTA - better campus social life

UTD - cheaper (for you)

and whatever other factor that you care about.

If you really want to work for big 4 (or the next tier), UTA. If not, your success might not depend on UTA or UTD.

getoveritnow: UTA is in Arlington. The University in Austin is UT- Austin.

You know what the word “context” means? This thread is talking about UT Austin vs UT Dallas. So here, UTA stands for UT Austin.

And FYI, my boss went to UT Austin for Accounting. Went on to be one of the top 10 guys at Citicorp. And he refers to UT Austin as UTA all the time because within the context of his conversations, everyone knew he was referring to Austin.

And as an advice for the future, try to add to a conversation with actual content instead of nitpicking. You will do much better in the workplace.

getoveritnow

WOW! How rude! lisiatc is a parent, she probably knows much more about workplace than you do.

I don’t know much about McCombs, but I believe that if you are already accepted to this school you will not have any problems with accounting.
You will need special application only if you decide to apply to BHP or Integrated MPA
[Integrated MPA | McCombs School of Business](http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/MPA/Prospective-Students/Integrated-MPA)
I am under impression after reading posts here that it’s actually Integrated MPA that has the highest employment right after graduation, including Big 4 companies.
MPA program will be more expensive, no doubt.

As for finances, you have to wait till Spring break. It’s the time when UT usually releases financial aid packages. When you have all the info how much UT Austin and UT Dallas are going to cost YOUR FAMILY you have to sit with your parents and discuss finances with them, since they are paying. Only your parents know what they can afford and what they can’t (especially if you have siblings).

Also, COA (Cost of attendance)

UT Dallas 22,246 per year (current cost)

UT Austin (without transportation and personal expenses) 22,850 per year (current cost)

Yeh. And he/she/it acted like a parent who reprimanded his/her/its child based on assumptions. The correct way to have addressed it was:

Getoveritnow, by UTA, did you mean UT-Austin or UT-Arlington?

Out of curiosity, how do you if he/she/it has even been in the workplace? More assumptions?

Being a parent doesn’t necessarily make him/her/it any wiser or dumber.

No one, but no one, in the State of Texas has EVER referred to UT as UTA to distinguish it as the Austin campus. Your boss went to UTA or is maybe from far far away.

In this case, i.e. the original post and its subject, the discussion is between UT Austin and UT Dallas, so most likely, UTA meant Austin in the context of this thread.

Or are we that dense in here that I needed to spell out UT Austin in this context?

And if you’re worrying about the acronym more than the meat of the post, then you have a little too much free time; and/or you’re caught up in the little longhorn bubble and realize that on one else cares about the acronym.

Here’s what part of the rest of the universe thinks about the UTA acronym:

[University of Texas at Austin - What does UTA stand for? Acronyms and abbreviations by the Free Online Dictionary.](<a href=“University of Texas at Austin]University - How is University of Texas at Austin]University abbreviated?”>University of Texas at Austin - How is University of Texas at Austin abbreviated?)

UTA University of Texas at Arlington
UTA University of Texas at Austin (also seen as UTXA)

And here’s to you, a quote from Doris Lessing: Small things amuse small minds.

No offense getoveritnow. Im pretty sure you didn’t mean too much when you represented UT-Austin as UTA, but as a UT-Austin graduate, I was always bit offended when someone called my school UTA. And I think this might be the cases for many UT-Austin students.

I agree with ruralroute, bmpark1987, Ya Ya and lisiatc. UT - Austin is never referred to as UTA except by the uninformed.

I agree with the others. My dad has been a UT professor since 1965, so I practically grew up on campus (as well as getting my BS and MS in engineering there). The campus in Austin is referred to as either “UT” or “UT-Austin,” never “UTA.”

So that covers that…back to the original question. If you plan on grad school take the better deal. If bs is all you want go to Austin. Austin is more prestigious but if you want big accounting you need a school like Mellon. If engineering Austin makes sense. Most people are happy with their choice because they get emotionally attached. Once you have worked for a few years no one cares where you got your degree (unless it is a bad online alternative) .

Oh and the people who go to UTA have more reason to be offended than UT grads. Relax. Don’t let college define your life. :)
