A big question is what major are you applying for. Some majors are much more competitive than others. CS, engineering and business are very competitive. You have a great SAT score but you are right that your GPA will hurt you. Being OOS you are competing for very few slots, about 7%. You will need to write a great essay, maybe address the Bs in Spanish. UT is definitely a reach school for but nothing tried, nothing gained. Do make sure you have some matches and safeties but with your SAT score that should not be hard.

Why do you want to attend UT? Most people go there for engineering and the GPA kind of makes it hard.

Ut is all about GPA and class rank. Your test scores will help you but you’d be better off applying to other top schools or schools that are more holistic. It is a public university meant to serve the people of Texas. There already aren’t enough spots for them, so your odds aren’t very good. Also, can your parents afford 50k a year, no scholarship?
What are your reasons for liking ut so much?

I like their engineering program. My gpa sucks but I’m top 15 percent at one of the best high schools in new England.

@lionking973

Your class rank doesn’t matter that much for OOS, but class rank is one of those things that’s basically “miss it by an inch, then you might as well miss it by a mile”. A person who has a class rank 1% off the auto-admit has basically the same chance of getting auto-admit as a person who missed the cut by 10%. Not that you would get auto-admit as an OOS, but just pointing it out.

BTW, your GPA does not suck. It looks like to me, your school does less grade inflation than most other schools. If you are in the top 15% with 3.6, the majority of the kids at your school are not making A’s. Unfortunately, that doesn’t help you with UT admissions unless they are aware of this. Also, if your B’s are in Spanish, again I would explain this, if possible, in the essay. My youngest DD, took 1 year of Spanish in MS and figured out that she could never trill her r’s. She then switched to Latin because it was an unspoken language.

But what everybody is saying is that your chances aren’t good and that is true but that 800 in math is impressive. So apply and hope for the best. There are also many good engineering schools. With your scores, there are many schools that would want you and probably would be willing to pay you to go there. As long as their programs are accredited, offer research and internship opportunities, you would do well. Don’t get fixated on UT, apply but look for other opportunities.

Many universities have excellent Engineering programs - Rose Hulman, Harvey Mudd, Northeastern, your state’s flagship, MUST Rolla, etc.

Your GPA won’t matter but the corresponding rank matters a lot. Your test scores will help but UT engineering will also want to see you take AP Calculus (preferably BC) and Calculus based physics i.e. AP Physics C.

Use your essays to demonstrate interest in engineering.
