Hi everyone! I’m nearing the end of the college search process and I’m facing a fairly difficult decision. I have narrowed my college choices to the UT Austin (in Plan II) and Rice University. With finances aside, Rice is my top choice.
However, my parents have saved enough to get me through UT with little to no debt, while even with a merit scholarship, attending Rice would leave me $70,000 in debt. I plan to attend law school or graduate school after undergrad. For the reason of cost, I am leaning towards attending UT. Thoughts?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Wow! Congratulations!
No wrong choice here academically but since UT is cheaper and Plan II is so prestigious, that’s what I’d pick.
University of Texas Plan II Honors is the only realistic option for one intending to go to law school or graduate school after undergraduate study.
Some graduate schools estimate the annual cost as high as $110,000 per year (NYU MBA).
If seriously thinking about law school, one with over $70,000 in student loan debt may have to forgo attending a Top 13 law school and sacrifice great job opportunities in order to attend a regional law school on full or partial scholarship.
There’s no rational reason to go to Rice and pay $70k for a bachelors degree. If you want to go to law school, the less debt the better. Also, you’re right next to UT Law school.
Thank you all for the advice!
