UT Austin: Spring Transfer 2019 Thread

@kwwhit73 My daughter is in the same boat. She applied and was accepted to A&M in a matter of 15 day, but we sit waiting to get a reply from UT. I attended UT, but at this point I’m starting to embrace the idea of A&M, as we need to get things hammered out.

In the same boat as you are! I applied to UT in August and I’m impatiently waiting on my status to update. Already have 2 possible rooming situations figured out but if I don’t get into UT I’d be going to Texas State so I also have 2 possible rooming situations in San Marcos. Just really frustrating knowing that I can’t lock down a place until I know for sure where I’m going.

STATS:

  • Applying to COLA as a Health and Society major
  • 3.8 GPA
  • ~ 50 hours
  • Member of Sigma Kappa Delta
  • 50+ Volunteer hours
  • 3 LORs, 2 from last professors 1 from recent employer
  • 2 strong essays reviewed by my previous comp&rhetoric professors
  • Summer internship at Texas Children’s
  • Presidents List 2 years in a row at local CC
  • Early high school graduate
  • Denied admission into Biology for Fall 2018, was given CAP option instead but I denied and stayed at local CC for a year because I already had 30 college hours from Dual Credit in high school and I would’ve lost those hours if I had accepted the CAP program

From what I’ve seen from last year they usually start rolling out admission decisions around November 16 but some very unlucky people didn’t get theirs until after thanksgiving break. Scary stuff.

G-D, I hope they let us know soon. I need to start planning for spring!

@rangerfan34 what are your stats if you don’t mind saying? I applied to Econ as my first and Gov as my second

@utcolahopeful no problem!

Stats:
-GPA-3.89 (my only college grade that is not an A was from my junior year of high school dual credit class)
-53 hours
-Member of Phi Theta Kappa and Mu Alpha Theta
-100+ volunteer hours
-4 LORs
-2 strong essays that were revised and edited with head tutor of English dept. at my cc
-Finance internship at a local business incubator for a year
-Academic Excellence Award & one or two other awards that I can’t remember. yikes
-Presidents List at my cc

That’s all I can think of at the moment! I’m hoping for the best, but in the back of my mind I’m kinda doubting an acceptance. Trying to block out the negative thoughts hahaha.

Hey I was wondering if someone would mind chancing me?
applied Fall 2018 into Mccombs and was denied

Applying Spring 2019 into COLA HDO
-in state
-3.841 with 29 hours at UMass
-3.57 with 21 hours at ACC (dual credit)
-combined GPA of 3.72
-4 LORs (1 athletic academic advisor, 1 professor, 1 sports coach, 1 high school teacher)

  • 2 strong essays
  • 100+ volunteer hours
  • Student Council VP
  • On academic & athletic scholarship at my previous university

How many in class university hours do you have? Not AP. If you have close to 60 hours in class with that gpa you listed, good LOR’s, decent resume, etc…Mate, i think all looks good!

@Sith77 I have 53 hours from my community college including retaking the class I got AP credit for in high school. 2 of my LORs are from Directors of where I intern, 1 from a past professor, and 1 from my current college adviser. I believe my resume is pretty solid. It makes me sad that my 4.0 is seen as a 3.89 just because the dual credit class a few years ago, but I know that admissions looks at positive trends so hopefully it works out!

@rangerfan34 Hi - My son has applied to COLA Economics (HDO as second choice). I have been reading posts and it’s sounding like he might have difficulty getting in without a large amount of class hours? He graduated HS last May, which puts him behind those that have more hours.

He applied (and appealed) to McCombs (3.95 GPA / over 400 service hours / 32 ACT / Varsity football / President of a Service Club) and was denied. He turned down the colleges that accepted him due to a strong desire to go to UT.

GPA: 4.0
Total Hours: 38 (29 completed upon application)
Prerequisites for Econ: completed

Course hours: 25
Comp 1 & Comp 2 (Dual-Credit from Senior Year)
Microeconomics
Calculus 2
TX Gov (currently taking at ACC)
Sociology (currently taking at ACC)
Human Geo (currently taking at ACC)

Credit hours: 13
Macroeconomics
Government
History 1
Calculus 1

Good LOR’s, heavy community service, intern and work experience.

My understanding is that they review applications first that have completed the hours and prerequisites and place the incomplete ones on hold until the semester is completed? I am hoping he will have a better chance since he has completed prerequisites and hours? I would love your thoughts.

Is anybody here applying for education?

@MomHorn , your son has a chance at McCombs. I would consider waiting until the spring to try and external transfer into McCombs for the fall of 2019 unless he’s dead set on economics

@MomHorn I’m not exactly sure how that works. I do believe that having the prerequisites completed when the application is sent does help your chances quite a bit.

I applied to McCombs for the fall and was denied as well. Same as your son, I didn’t have all my pre reqs completed by the deadline, so we’re in the same boat. Your son’s credentials look great! I think he has a really good chance at admission.

Hey everyone!! Since none of you know who I am, I am currently a student at UT who transferred in this past summer! I haven’t had any chance to read through this thread, but I’m sure you’re all going to have a few questions about the process.

UT is TERRIBLE about timely returns for decisions. I sent my application in on February 6, didn’t hear back until May 21, the day before the summer session orientation session registration deadline. We were told that we would hear back at the end of APRIL. So be patient, and while it may seem like the time you wait correlates to your decision, just know that that isn’t true in the slightest.

As for GPA- the estimations are bull. The average GPA for COLA transfers when I applied was about a 3.5-3.6, same as it is now. I had a 3.41. For COLA and the school’s that aren’t McCombs, Moody, Cockrell, and to some extent CNS, the big thing they look at are your essays- and seeing as I spent like two months on mine, I had some pretty great essays. At this point, you’ve already submitted your apps- you’ve done everything you can, just try to not sweat it.

My last thing before I go (I have Spanish in literally 69 seconds as I’m writing this), don’t call the admissions office when they inevitability take forever and a day to get back to you. The people who answer the phones are students who work for the school, their guess as to when you’ll hear back is as good as yours.

If you have any more questions, feel free to message me! And best of luck to each of you- UT is a great school on paper, and it’s even better when you experience it in person.

Thank you so so so much for that encouragement. Obviously this would be a good problem to have if he is accepted into Econ. Do you feel degree from McCombs is that much better compared to Economics? I have also heard they are considering moving Econ into Business school?

J3ennife4 is there a way to contact you off site? I have questions. Cheers!

Have some heard back? I am extremely anxious

I don’t think so anyone has heard back yet. Maybe later this week or next week they’ll start sending out decisions

I am! 3.43, applied learning & development , 3 LOR, Strong essays and resume.

You’ve heard back already? :open_mouth:

You’ve heard back? @sp1234567
