I am almost done with my UT application besides the statement of purpose. I’ve been having trouble with it because the essay is an important part to the entire application, of course, but the statement of purpose seems difficult to nail. Here is the prompt:
The statement of purpose will provide an opportunity to explain any extenuating circumstances that you feel could add value to your application. You may also want to explain unique aspects of your academic background or valued experiences you may have had that relate to your academic discipline. The statement of purpose is not meant to be a listing of accomplishments in high school or a record of your participation in school-related activities. Rather, this is your opportunity to address the admissions committee directly and to let us know more about you as an individual, in a manner that your transcripts and other application information cannot convey.
I also have personally grown a-lot in the past few months that I think would benefit in explaining in my essay. I could explain on moving from a foreign country in a situation very different from other people. I grew up bi-racial, living amongst the 1% aristocratic Guatemalans (even though my family wasn’t aristocrats ourselves). I feel like I also have a-lot insight in having seen each side of the world. The extremely rich, the extremely poor, and the middle class (being middle class myself and now having moved to America nearly broke and poor myself). Would that story benefit this essay? Or is it better saved for another essay prompt?
Feel free to comment and say if they aren’t specific enough:
Reasons why I want to transfer–
- UT Austin has a great program in the Radio Television and Film Major where I can study film production + have a semester in Los Angeles. I could really seeks my teeth into the industry and it is a great field to play in as a starting filmmaker.
- There is a great scheme of things going on in UT Austin; there is literally anything you can think of. You have opportunities to explore. Even though the film program is juicy in itself, it's more than that. The chance to do more than that academically, culturally, and socially is enough for me to want to live in UT Austin for the next 3+ years.
- Austin is a great city for filmmakers. UT Austin has the benefit of having access to the art scene going on in Austin. There are cultural opportunities as a student
- The community college I attend has slim opportunities within the arts + the arts are not funded well. I've had a strong start in my community college, but I think that UT Austin has a fantastic array of programs that would keep me exploring like a kind in a candy store. UT Austin embraces those artistic type of students within any kind of Fine Art programs, programs strong enough where it is one of the many fortes of UT Austin.
