UT Austin Transfer

Hi everyone! I was hoping someone could help me figure my chances on transferring. Basically I go to UT - Arlington which is obviously in the UT system. This semester I have gotten A's in 3 classes (possibly four, my final grade has yet to be posted) but my BIG ISSUE is that I'm pretty sure I failed the fifth one. Will they be understanding? The class I failed was a math class and I was hoping they'd see math isn't my forte? Also, is there anything I can do to counteract this blow on my transcript and if I do well in the spring, will they take that into consideration (I'll be halfway done with the semester by the time the applications are due). If it helps I want to major in Int'l Relations and Global Studies so I'll be in the College of Liberal Arts. Does it help that I go to a UT system school? I'm really freaking out and didn't expect this to happen. Thanks to all who help!

If you need more info from me, please ask!!

What year are you? What was the name of the math class?

I think that going to a UT system school would only help if you are under the CAP program:

<a href=“Prospective CAP Students | Undergraduate Admissions | The University of Texas at Austin”>Prospective CAP Students | Undergraduate Admissions | The University of Texas at Austin;

They can’t take your spring grades into account if your application is sent halfway through the semester. There should be somewhere on your application where you can list the names of the classes you are taking in the Spring but there’s no way they’d see those Spring grades before making a decision. Failing a class will make a big dent in your application but it would also depend on how many classes you’ve already taken. If you haven’t taken many classes and already failed one, that’s a bigger problem than if you have taken a lot of classes and just failed your first class. You don’t have much to lose by applying though.

You have two things going for you with the College of Liberal Arts at UT.

1) It’s the easiest college to get into at UT.

2) It has a list of “alternative” natural science courses that UT Liberal Arts students can take to satisfy the core curriculum requirements of their degree that most people of other colleges aren’t allowed to take. These are watered down courses. On that list is M 302 “Introduction to Mathematics.” That is the mathematics course you would take here which may be a lot easier than the math class you took but I’m not sure which one you took.

Alternative science courses:

http://www.utexas.edu/cola/academic-affairs/_files/pdf/Course_Lists/12_Alt_Nat_Sci_SumFa13.pdf</a></p>

M 302:

https://www.ma.utexas.edu/academics/courses/syllabi/M302.php</a></p>

The above is only true if you have completed 30 hours. If you’re completing your 30 hours this semester, the decision won’t be released once you have your grades for this semester. Honestly, your failing class could prevent you from being accepted because it’s about performance at the college level. If you can’t pass classes at UT Arlington, you will need to show that you can improve and face the (assumingly) more challenging courses at UT Austin.

The course was College Algebra. I am currently a freshman and this is my first semester, so I will be completing my 30 hours next semester. Is it over for me then?

Also I thought the classes offered at ut system schools were similar to the ones at ut austin? I’m probably wrong. And is there anything I can do to counteract this fail, like as far as my application?

@SadHippo‌ @Longhorns061012‌ Oh and does it help me any that I’ve gotten A’s in all the other classes? I’m just not the best at math :(

Well good news is that if a college/major would overlook it, it would be UGS or Liberal Arts. They worry less about the math and science grades I would imagine. But is this your last semester? Or do you have one more to go to try to add some good grades?

@Longhorns061012‌ Okay that sounds good… I have next semester to finish but i thought they wouldn’t look at my spring semester grades because the applications for fall 2015 are due in March.

I did not know you were a freshman. You can call or email and ask if they need your spring semester grades prior to admitting you since you are a freshman.

I can’t tell you your precise chances since I’m not an advisor but I can say that I know some Liberal Arts majors here who are decent at math and some Liberal Arts majors here that can’t do math to save their life. Of the ones that struggle at math, they are still able to be successful here since math isn’t particularly important to their degree. Some of those people are able to do their math here. Some of them struggled big time in the math here and had to drop it and then made an easy A at their local community college over the summer. Some never attempted math here and just waited for the summer. Therefore you can be successful here despite not being good at math but the admissions may still get you since you have taken very few classes and already failed.

It would probably look pretty good on your application if you are able to pass the math class (maybe done over the summer at a CC) at a later date though that would only be useful for if you are applying a year from now since it wouldn’t be on your transcript yet.

Have you looked into:

1) Applying a year later where your failed course would now carry less significance and you would possibly have that math class completed on your transcript for the application by then to show improvement

2) Would you still be able to finish your degree in two years if you applied a year later

3) Whether or not applying this year will harm your chances if you apply next year

4) What the difference is in expectation for a student applying with 30 credit hours vs 60. Are admissions more likely to prefer applicants with less credits?

I think those are all good questions for you to ask but I don’t know the answers to them.

@SadHippo‌ so is there no hope for me if i apply for the fall? I think you have to have 60 credits on campus before you can actually get your degree so 30 is a good amount. Also i spoke to my advisor at UTA and he said they might admit me but they may make me take it in the summer. I don’t know I’m just kicking myself over this math class. I really didn’t think i was going to end up failing. Will they look at my GPA more or my transcript of classes because if my gpa is high anyway with the failing class, will they care as much? Thank you for all your help by the way!

In general, failed classes mean more than just a 0 gpa because they hold you back 3 credit hours since you have to retake the course so they will be aware of that. I don’t know what the drop policy is at UTA but I know that at UT, students really shouldn’t have any F’s on transcripts because they should be Q-dropping them. I have done pathetic in some courses but I was still able to drop them (two courses) before the Q-drop deadline which I believe is something like half way through the semester here. This is how I have 9 C’s on my transcript but have never scored below.

If it is true that they will get your spring grades on your application for this fall, your chances should be much better. It’s hard to prove yourself when you have only taken one semester and one of the classes was failed. If it is true that applying for this Fall will not negatively impact the chance of you getting admitted upon applying a year later, then you have nothing to lose by at least trying.

Well the class I failed isn’t even transferable so there’s that, and I may not even have enough hours to transfer with (only 29). My gpa is pretty low now but a friend who transferred this year said they do take spring semester grades as well. Maybe if I do well next semester, I’ll have a chance, but I am missing a credit.

Wow I’m just lost haha and I don’t know what to do.

Thanks for your help guys, i think i may apply and if i don’t get in I’ll wait a semester. Wish me luck!
