UT Austin vs. Northeastern Architecture

Hi all. Currently torn between UT Austin and Northeastern University for architecture. UT’s program is consistently ranked as one of the best in the nation, but the size of the school is mind-boggling and I have never really pictured myself at a massive state school. Northeastern’s program is not really talked about but it seems adequate and the school would definitely provide a cozier feel at almost 1/4 the size. Some of my opinions:

-definitely prefer a city campus feel and I’ve heard that UT doesn’t really have that considering its size
-having a hard time figuring out the vibe of Northeastern? To quote an advice video I watched, “it’s just weird. everything is just a little bit weird here.” They also said the social scene is not great and there definitely is not as much school spirit/traditions as UT. I can imagine a big school experience but I just can’t quite figure out what life at NU would be like?
-That being said, I think Northeastern’s campus is stunning and I much prefer it to UT’s
-I would rather be up north in Boston than down south but I know that Austin is very unlike the rest of Texas so I can see myself there as well
-I’m intrigued by the co-op program but I’ve heard mixed opinions regarding the merit of co-op along with NU’s other preprofessional offerings

Overall I think I prefer the feel of NU but I can’t imagine turning down a program like UT’s. Any opinions regarding architecture, social scene/student life, or campus at either school is much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi! I’m a student at UT Austin, and I’m not sure about Northeastern’s campus but I love UT’s campus. It is pretty big, but it’s easy to make friends with people and feel like you fit in through them. It’s kind of like there’s a space for everyone? Like, I’m pretty introverted and I can’t stand drinking/partying, but my friends are all like me so I never feel pressured (or influenced at all) to drink.

I would definitely recommend watching a few videos of UT orientation or maybe a campus tour but I like the campus overall! My classes are close by (a 15 minute walk maximum, compared to some of my friends who bus to class), and there are lots of restaurants and apartments nearby. The campus isn’t gorgeous like an Ivy League or something, but there is a nice skyline and the buildings are pretty. It feels a lot like home to me, and I’ve only been there for 2 years.

not sure if this helps, but I’ve heard good things about the architecture program, too! I heard it takes a lot of work, but it’s worth it.

Good luck making your choice!
