I am debating between these two schools. I mean, to me, it seems like they are almost exactly the same. Great sports, great party scene, solid academics, great college towns, and most of all hot girls(j/k)! Is there any major difference between the two schools that could sway me one way or the other? Thanks!

Yea for the most of part they are pretty damn similar! But I have to concede that UT Austin does have more top programs than UF does. It's on the level of MIT, Berkeley, Stanford in engineering and has many other top programs. (but of course UF is pretty good as well!) But I would try to visit both schools and try to get a feel for the campus and city. Also take into consideration the financial packages each school will offer. It is my guess that UF will be more generous than UT. If you have any specific questions about UF, please ask.

Sure. The Gators are the national football champions and the national basketball champions. UF students are very proud of these feats and the alum are prouder. The Gator Nation keeps getting stronger and stronger.

I love the state of Florida.

Texas scares me.

Florida is a lot more cosmopolitan.

But I guess they are pretty similar. Florida has Cuba, Texas has Mexico... hah.

I don't know guess it's a personal taste thing. I just love Florida. I'd never move, ever.

i would choose Austin over Gainesville if you are out of state...i highly suggest you visit both and compare

Florida is a lot more cosmopolitan than Texas? Perhaps as a whole, but G-ville is a teeny backwater compared to Austin, which is an artsy, vibrant cultural mecca. (yes, I realize this is a UF forum, but lets be honest here)

More importantly to the OP, have you actually applied to UT & UF or are you just talking in the abstract about future apps? Because UT is virtually impossible as an OOS admit these days, with a strict cap on % of OOS students. Seriously, you would likely need UVa/Umich/Berkeley type numbers for admission, particularly for popular programs like engineering or business.

About being cosmopolitan, I meant florida as a whole. It depends a lot on where you want to live afterwards. If you want to live in either state, go to that college, because the alumni network will be much more dense there. If you don't want to live in either state, go to whichever one has the better program for what you're interested in.

Since I want to live in Florida, UF is a no-brainer for me. The gator nation network is immense and powerful here :).

Art, I am just talking about the abstract future. Oh, btw I am an OOS to both schools.

UT Austin Engineering isn't on the same level as MIT, Berkeley, and Stanford.

"Austin, which is an artsy, vibrant cultural mecca."

Sure it is. I agree that those three are slightly better, but they are in no way in another league from Austin. For example, take a look at the number of NAE faculty Austin has.

Eh depends on how you make your leagues, it's subjective I guess. But I'm not saying UT is bad or anything, just that I've always heard Stanford, MIT, and Berkeley to be the top 3 schools for grad engineering.

oh how i love texas. i might live there after i graduate. of course, i didnt go to ut austin, but i was really considering it because of its great programs, cheap tuition and longhorn tradition.

florida is a risen program. it was a rising program but now it has become a good one. its also a good option.

To me= no brainer; go where it will be cheaper. The schools are so freaking close that the post graduation oppertunities won't be much different at all. Both schools are SOLID!

Austin isn't the way you would picture Texas... it really is a "vibrant, artsy, cultural mecca." It's also the live music capitol of the world. Gainesville... well, except for UF it's a really crappy town. UT Austin's academics are also on a much higher level than UF's.

FACT: UF and UT-Austin were ranked equal in the 2007 edition of US News
(Tied at 47th overall, and 13th best public)

FACT: UF is more selective than UT-Austin for Undergraduate admissions
(UF is the 39th most selective University)

FACT: UT-Austin is required by law to take the top 10% of all graduating
Texans. Therefore you more likely to have medicore students in your
classes.

Bright Futures ???

It really depends on your major and social preference. In the things that the OP stated such as 'Girls, Athletics etc' they are both pretty much similar.
UT is superior in most fields but UF has some ones that would be considered better.
Even though Austin is Austin is still has a more laid back atmosphere.
UF is definetly more cosmopolitan/flash even though it's a swamp.

My older s goes to UF, my middle s is going to UT next year, my husband is a UT alum...

My s who is at UF LOVES it! It truly is a college town, in fact, it kind of reminds me of what Austin was like 20+ years ago before the population exploded. In Gainesville, almost everyone has some ties to the college so they are very tolerant of the crazy college stuff that goes on. The town goes nuts over the success of the sports teams and it is all encouraged and accepted. The downtown area, just down University Ave., has lots of fun bars, restaurants, clubs, etc. and the Greek scene (if that's what your into) is thriving. My older s is not a fraternity type guy, he is a surfer, finds the music scene to be good, although to see the bigger acts, he goes either to Jacksonville or Orlando. The beaches are beautiful, St. Augustine, a prime surf spot is about 1 1/2 away and they spend many weekends camping there when the weather warms up. It is a different lifestyle than Austin, a little slower paced and laid back, but a great college experience.

Austin has a fantastic music scene - SxSW and Austin City Limits being two of the best festivals in the country, plus all of the venues available for touring bands and local talent. The city has tons of restaurants, bars, etc. The Greek scene is big and fun. My younger s wants to go to UT because he wants to be closer to home, wants to live in Texas after he graduates, and wants to be a Longhorn the worlds worst way!!

The difference is "city life"-Austin or "college town"-Gainesville. The people are nice in both cities and kind of similar, it seems to me.

As for the education, they are both, imo, great state schools with great reputations, and you will make of your education what you will. Both will give good opportunities. If you definitely plan on making Texas your home, you might prefer UT because of the alumni network, same goes for Florida.
