I am a high school senior from Texas majoring in biomedical engineering and I have narrowed down my college search to UT Austin and UMICH Ann Arbor. I recently got a merit scholarship from Michigan bringing the cost down to about 6k/year higher than UT in state cost, which is a difference my parents would likely be willing to help pay. I think I would probably prefer southern weather and culture, but could adapt to the North and would like the experience of living out of state. I am just looking for reasons to choose one or the other and am looking for some input. Thanks!
Tough choice. Both outstanding. I would go with personal “fit” and the extra money isn’t a bad thing either.
What is the entry to major process at UMICH for engineering? And what do you want to do with your BME degree? At UT it will be really touch to switch to a different engineering major. Lots of kids want to switch out of BME when they realize the job prospects are dimmer and that so many biomedical companies prefer MechE over BME. There are only so many opportunities in the still limited world of tissue engineering
If you perceive more flexibility at UMICH then that’s something else to consider.
^tough. Not touch.
@joey3432 go blue !
My friend at UMich switched from BME to mechE after she realized slim chances of getting employed in the field .like mentioned above. Reputation of umich engineering school (I think???) is better Ann Arbor is cool college town , tough winters but u can survive. For only 6k more I would go umich !!
Both schools are basically on equal playing fields in terms of engineering. If you take the opportunities at both schools, you’ll be successful.
What is most important is fit. Would you rather live in a city like Austin or a college town like Ann Arbor? Have you toured both?
It sounds like Texas is a better fit, but if you want to try something new, Michigan is the one.
Factor in travel to your costs and parkas
Thank you all for your help! The major flexibility at Michigan is something I hadn’t considered. I’ve established that I think the fit is slightly better at UT but I just have to be certain that I want to go to BME. At least I have a few weeks to decide.
I would recommend against BME. Do mechanical instead. BMEs are having trouble finding jobs.
For students in the engineering division, 2.0 college GPA needed with prerequisites completed:

For students not in the engineering division who want to change into the engineering division, 2.5 college GPA needed with prerequisites completed (but this does not appear to give assurance of changing):
