I got accepted in to UT and UTD. I want to do pre-med, however, I am not sure which one will be better. Which school will increase my chances of top-ranked medical schools? Money is not the decision-maker.
Neither.
Did you get into the honors program at either one?
If you weren’t to go to med school, which one would you want to graduate from?
I did not get into any of the honors program. For Austin, I applied and didn’t get in while for Dallas I missed the deadline. I personally feel that schools that have smaller class sizes and where I can get to know my professor will be the best.
Also, is honors a deciding factor in med school admissions? If I have a high GPA, MCAT score, and good extracurriculars will that makeup for the no honors?
Honors College isn’t a direct factor, but an indirect one: honors students are in smaller classes, which means they get to know their professors, who in turn can write better recommendation letters. They tend to do better than in regular classes and through honors’ priority registration can avoid terrible professors or schedules. They have a personal adviser who can then contact them about opportunities. For all these reasons, honors students have a leg up so to speak.
You will have giant classes at UT and large classes at UTD without honors.
If you want to know your professor, where else have you applied? (TCU? St Edward’s?)
I doubt there is much difference between UT and UTD for getting into medical schools except UT having a medical school on campus and as a bigger school UT offering more opportunities for on campus research as well.
If money isn’t an issue and you prefer small classes and connection with professors than should have applied to smaller private colleges with strong pre-med advising.
I have applied to smaller colleges that have yet to release their decisions. The thing about honors is that I can reapply sophomore year at UT but not UTD.
.
UT Dallas has a med school as well. And it also has research opps.
Med schools will not care which one you go to. They’ll care about your grades, MCAT, ECs, LORs.
Neither school will increase your chances for a “top ranked med school.”
But either way, all med schools are excellent. You’re a Texas resident and most successful texas premeds go to a Texas med school because of the heavy instate bias AND the very low cost of Texas med schools.
If you want to go pre-med then think about:
- The cheapest reasonable college so you/your parents can use the money for med school
- The college needs to prepare you for MCATs but still allow you to get a good GPA
- Access to volunteering opportunities (e.g., near a hospital)
- Success in graduates getting into med school
- Options if you don’t go to med school
;Med schools care about your GPA and MCAT. They don’t care about the name of your college.
