Ut Austin vs UW Madison

I am posting this on behalf of my cousin who has eliminated his college choices down to these two schools. He wants to study Biology or Chemistry, wants a nice college town, huge party school, a school with prestige, etc. Costs aren't an issue and was wondering which school would be the best academically and socially.

Check this thread. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-texas-austin/1504321-how-ut-austin-campus.html

Both offer excellent academics and a great school environment. Weather may be the determining factor.

UT Austin and UW Madison were my son’s top two choices also (we are from Indiana and he will be studying Mechanical Engineering). We visited both schools both before and after he was admitted. Although I preferred Madison (mostly because I can drive there and not have to fly there) he chose UT. UT admitted him directly into mechanical engineering (at UW you have to apply to the particular engineering department after a year or so) and UT admitted him into their Honors Engineering Program, with $5,000 a year scholarship. He will hopefully be living in their Honors Quad, which are very nice. I think both schools really have it all, but the weather swayed him somewhat, too. Good luck! (One other small note - UT admits only 5% from out of state, while I think Wisconsin may admit more like 25 or 30 percent - not sure if this will make much difference in the feel of the school - we will see.)

I attended grad school at both UW-Madison and UT-Austin. I liked both schools for different reasons, but I much preferred Austin over Madison.

My daughter will likely apply to both schools for engineering too. I did notice in the the oos % of incoming freshmen for UT-A is very low but I wasn’t sure if that was a reflection of low interest on the part of OOS applicants or low acceptance. Are there any published stats that document the acceptance rate of OOS and what the academic stats are for those accepted?

I am pretty sure the % of out of state students is due to low acceptance, not interest. UT is reputed to favor Texans.

This seems to be stats for last year: [Out-of-State Students | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/whyut/profile/outofstate)
[The Freshman Class | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/whyut/profile)

You find this of interest as well:
https://sp.austin.utexas.edu/sites/ut/rpt/SitePages/stathandbook.aspx

All initially found with a Google search.

So the acceptance rate is much higher than I thought - 36% of OOS are accepted vs. the 10% freshman class that is OOS ( 24% of those who are accepted actually attend). Thanks for finding that.

We visited both schools, and the feel were almost identical! They both have so much to offer! Madison seemed more of a college town filled with many college students. However, Texas seemed really fun. The weather will play a role since hes more attracted to snow and that type of weather.
