I was just accepted to Texas today which has been my dream school for my entire life (mom went there). However I was accepted to Wisconsin in December and I visited last weekend and loved it. Intended major is chem which is great at both schools so that’s not much of a factor. I’m out of state for both (MD) and visited both but looking for opinions on the cultures of both schools and the differences between Austin and Madison!
They are both great schools, great cultural atmospheres, and excellent academics. Wisconsin a slight edge in chemistry, but not significant enough to dissuade you if your heart is set on Texas. But if you love Wisconsin, then perhaps follow your heart there. Many moons ago, I came from the east and was also very impressed with Wisconsin after a visit, as well as its chemistry department. So I chose its honors program over many other, diverse options.
Also, depending on your personality, you may want to do something different than your parents – or not. I wanted to be different from my parents, and going to the midwest seemed like the right choice at the time. Visits and communication with people at both schools (faculty, students, alumni, etc.) may be helpful. Congratulations, they are two of my favorite schools.
Edited to add: these two institutions are structurally and atmospherically more alike than different.
Go with your gut. In the end, you know what’s best for you better than anyone else. Sometimes it’s good to be different. Chances are, your dreams are going to be different when you’re 18 compared to when you’re 10.
You can’t go wrong with either choice. The weather is different. I don’t know but suspect that Austin is a more high growth city.
