UT Chance for Computer Science

Sat Score:720 CR,710 math,560 writing

Class rank:to 119/598 or 19.9%

GPA:4.75/3.54

Competitive High School within Texas

I couls get into EC, but they don't really make a big difference I imagine..

I expect the CAP program, and thats "okay," but what do you folks think?

If you’re trying to get in directly from high school outside the top 10% of your class, then it’s probably going to be a bit difficult. But even if you don’t get in, you can always transfer later. Transferring into UT’s computer science (if not going the cap route) is actually easy if you write a stellar application. I managed to get accepted into UT’s computer science program with a 3.21 GPA from UH so don’t let their competitiveness discourage you from applying.

I got in this year with somewhat worse stats,

Sat: Critical Reading: 650 | Math: 730 | Writing: 650

Class Ranking 255/752 | 34% (competitive magnet school)

GPA 3.6 (weighted)

A bunch of AP/PreAP classes including CompSci (with a score of 5) and some leadership positions in clubs and almost no volunteer hours

Also demographically I’m an asian female (I’m not sure if gender is a factor in UT’s admissions process but if you’re female you have a much higher chance of getting in due to the generally low number of females entering as a Computer Science major or so I hear)

From what I here, me and my brownness is actually over represented in computer science, so I won’t likely have that advantage(although the college just sees Asian). Your 34% gives me hope I’m not out of the running just because I’m out of the top 10. Gender is probably a factor, they have almost a perfect 50/50 gender split which is unlikely to reflect applicants. I have a large number of AP’s and club leaderships, and also plenty of volunteer hours so that should be good. I’m starting to think they lump you into a different category if yours SAT is over 2000, which is making me very paranoid about the 1990.

Oh, and do they care what I select as my Major while admitting me t the school in general? I thought that wasn’t even looked at until afterwards.
